Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Tom Owen Oswestry

Chris,

I have a copy of a book called 'Kenricks in Hardware' - it's a history of the Birmingham Kenricks. A William Kenrick married Mary Chamberlain, Joseph Chamberlain's elder sister, in 1862.  Llewellyn Kenrick would have been distantly related to William (also the name of Llewellyn's father)

Forgive me, Chris. Obviously the exclamation mark after my comment on Kenrick can't convey irony.

I co-wrote the Who's Who of Welsh International Players* in which the quote from W P Owen featured. Incidentally, I met W P's son Hugh in the late 1980s, lovely chap.

* Revised and updated version out soon.

Many thanks, Chris. Much appreciated.

I think it's now case closed. An article in a 1909 Oswestry newspaper indicating that the Wales international Owen was a member of the Castle Blues team that won the Shropshire Cup in 1882 would rule out Wilfred’s father from being the international player  The Tom Owen who played for the Shrewsbury Castle Blues may have been an accountant who died in Shrewsbury in the 1930s but it hasn't been possible to link him to the 1879 match when he would have been 28 years old.

Kenrick - a familiar name!

Monmouthshire / Re: Ebbw Vale FC

After leaving the Southern League Ebbw Vale continued in the Welsh League and also played in the Monmouth Senior League,  They resigned from the Welsh League in 1935 after being members of the league for 31 years. In August 1937, after an absence of two years from senior football they returned to the first division of the Welsh League.

Cuthbert Phillips was chased by several clubs and opted for Wolves. Jack Pullen signed for Plymouth Argyle, his only Football League club.

In John Harding's biography of Billy Meredith there are two photographs of the directors in 1904 when the club won the FA Cup. Painter is not among them.

According to the National Archives the club's records are at

Monmouthshire / Re: Abertillary Football Club 1920s
« on: Sunday 04 March 18 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
A club was in being in Abertillery in December 1908. They joined the Southern League in 1913 and returned to that league after the war. They were also members of the Western League for one season - 1920-21. At one time the club's player-manager was James Blessington (ex Scottish international).  At the end of the 1920-21 season they (ambitiously) applied for election to the Football League but received only four votes.  In 1922 they finished in the penultimate place in the Southern League and the following season failed to complete their fixtures.  By 1923 they were defunct.   The team would have been professional and signed players from anywhere in the country. Lots of north east players were lured to south Wales by the money but it didn't last and by the mid to late 1920s most of these pro clubs had collapsed.

Alves was Mayor of Caernarfon at one time, maybe more than once. The Caernarfon and Denbigh Herald is almost certain to have an obituary on him. I have photo of him and he looks quite the tycoon.

His name lives on in North Wales football with the Alves Cup.

The Common Room / Re: Find My Past Subscription
« on: Friday 23 June 17 17:01 BST (UK)  »
I was a subscriber for at least five years until May 2017. I was offered a 15% discount to renew but my research had come to a temporary halt and, given all the offers, discounts etc, I decided not to take it up.  I was then sent an email asking why I'd quit.  Their best offer remained the 15% discount and they said that existing subscribers always got the best offers. When I suggested that did not always appear to be the case, the emails stopped!  For now I can manage perfectly well using Ancestry in my local library. ;D

I think I may have made a little progress on this one. Ebbw Vale won the Welsh Cup in 1926 by beating Swansea 3-2. The team included Thomas at right back and Billy McCandless, who was an Irish international player. I've found a report in the BNA that C Thomas and a G Bradburn were suspended by the Football Association of Wales for 14 days from the start of the 1925-26 season.  Bradburn was a former international, but with England.  You could only find out what they'd done by looking at a newspaper such as the Merthyr Express, or the FAW minutes which are at the National Library of wales in Aberystwyth. Hope this helps
