US Lookup Requests / birth look up in 1885 please
« on: Wednesday 28 January 15 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

would anyone be able to help me find the elusive Ethel Christina Hopper, born in USA 12 June 1885, various census say either USA or Ohio.

Her parents Emily and Edward Hopper, together with her brother Herbert, born 1880 came to USA aboard the City of Paris, landing 4 Jun 1883, supposedly going on to Ohio.

I have a certificate of record Edward dying back in his home town of Chatham in Kent in August 1885, but no record of any of the family returning to the UK, although they appear on later census.

many thanks

Carol

Hi Carol, thanks for your replies, how lovely to have a connection.  my grandfather was Richard Stafford dob 21.6.1896, born 12 Arbour Terrace Dublin, to Deborah Herbert and William Stafford, does this tie in with your family?  I always understood that Stafford was quite an unusual Irish name?  Grandad's name is on a scroll in St Michans.  Don't really know too much about this side of the family, but love being a quarter Irish!

look forward to hearing more from you

« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 19:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for Mary Ann Elizabeth ELGRAM, born around 1859/1860, I have a marriage certificate when she married Joseph John FRENCH, in 1879 in St Thomas Church, Parish of Bethnal Green, her father was William Elgram, I think he was a mariner, very curly writing!
She was 19 at time of marriage and her address is given as 24 Orange Street.  She has been eluding me for some time!! no luck at GRO.

any tips anyone?

Hi, thanks so much everyone for all the info, I now have to decide whether to 'hold out' for an Elgram to appear or to go with the different spelling on the name, what does your experience tell you, i'm sure you've come across this before.  I  have contacted an ancient relly who may know something and will have to wait for her to reply to  me.  That's interesting knowing that the address  1871 is near the docks.  I have this gut feeling I should stick witth the Elgram name, maybe something I can remember hearing as a child, I don't know, maybe I should be regressed!!!
