Perthshire / McArthurs leaving Perth in 1803 b/c of Clearances?
« on: Thursday 06 December 12 08:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

In 1803 brothers John William McArthur (MacArthur), William John and Arthur left Perthshire on a ship called the Roseanne for New Brunswick, Canada.

It's said the Canadian government offered them land to settle if they made the trip. I've never understood why they left, but a Scottish friend says it sounds like it might have been because of the Highland Clearances. I never really thought of that since it was Perth and not further north. What are the odds? How can I prove or disprove this?

I've read that in 1803 Lord Selkirk, who was sympathetic to highlanders, brought 800 colonists to Prince Edward Island. Which is an island right next to New Brunswick. Is it possible they were in with that lot and kept moving?

Thanks!

Perthshire / John McArthur B 1774 immigrated to Canada 1803-5?

OK, here's the deal: I'm trying to locate an ancestor, John McArthur that left Perthshire, Scotland for Canada in 1803-5 on a ship called the Roseann with his brothers William and Arthur (yeah, Arthur McArthur poor man).

A John was born in 1774, to Duncan McArthur (and Ann McNab) in Kenmore, Perthshire (so good so far) BUT I can't find the same couple having his brothers William and Arthur. This couple did have a son called Peter, who I've never heard of before. A Duncan McArthur (or more than one Duncan, it's hard to tell) did have sons named Arthur and William but with two different women in 1775 and 1776 but divorce didn't happen back then and there's no death date for any Ann McNab that fits neatly into this timeline. Did he just up and leave his wife, whom he married in 1763 for two other women in two years? The records are very well kept, but it's possible that something on Ann is missing...

Do you think I've found the right John McArthur?

Waterford / Protestant McKnights from Aglish Early 1800s
« on: Tuesday 16 August 11 16:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find where my family comes from in Ireland.

An old family tree done by a pro says Waterford Co, which is a little odd since we've always been Protestant but whatever...

I talked to a librarian at Presbyterian Historical Society of Ireland who said that in the late 1850s all the McKnights in the Co lived in Aglish.

My family immigrated in 1836 to Canada, don't know what port, what ship or where they landed in Canada.

All I know is the patriarch William McKnight and his wife Margaret were born in the late 1700s in Ireland and that they had several kids, including my great great grandfather, before they left in 1836.

What are the odds that Aglish is where they're from?
