Hi Ali

Pleased you enjoyed your time over here.  Certainly some great rugby being played.
I have managed to find the marriages of Isabella's brothers Andrew (to Mary Reid) and James (to Mary Fraser) so that was great.  Even found in the 1911 census the names of 3 of Andrews children - William, James and Emma.  Just very frustrating now to know how to find out more about them and their children.
Yes certainly am hopeful to stumble across someone with links to the family.  Presenting what we have found so far to my nana and her 4 sisters at the end of the month so to be able to take info/photos of a living relative would be wonderful.  I will keep hoping!!!
Kind regards, Amy

Aberdeenshire / Re: who writes the headstone?

Thanks everyone for your tips.
I have created an account with the Press and Journal to try to find an obituary but get an error message every time I try to search for that date.  Not sure whats happening with that.
I have found the online Glasgow Herald very good, but unfotunately doesn't cover 1992.
Any other ideas of online newspapers for Aberdeen/Glasgow for 1992?
Thanks

Aberdeenshire / who writes the headstone?
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 06:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi from NZ
I have found a relative Professor Mary Emma Dunn who died at Aberdeen 2 Dec 1992 age 80. She was apparently the first female professor at Strathclyde university.
Her parents and brother had died at that time, and they have a common headstone at 'Abernethy Parish Churchyard' (inland from Aberdeen?)
Mary was a spinster, so I wonder who actually wrote up the details on the headstone?
Mary is the closest I have found to a living relative!  Wondered if it is possible to find who looked after her funeral arrangements etc as this person may still be alive.  :-\
Thanks for any comments or suggestions

Donegal / Re: TB Death at Carrickmagrath, Donegal

Hi Quaxer

That is very helpful information.  Thank you for taking the time to write to me.
Yes you are correct that he had pulmonary TB (for 5 months) - which still makes me wonder why he didn't go home to his wife of 2 years in Scotland, rather than staying in Ireland.  Hmmmmm....

Regards

Thanks for your responses!
John was a Spirit Salesman, so perhaps that work took him to Ireland.
Both of his parents were also from Scotland, but nothing to say that he didn't have more distant relatives in Ireland.
If one got TB, would it be likely they could stay with family or would they be put in quarantine as such to prevent the risk or spreading?

Thanks
Amy

Hi Ali

Thanks for your reply.
Yes I have found the family in the census records up until 1911 (although James is missing in that one, and Robert is missing from the 1901 census).  The problem I have is trying to find them post 1911 so I can figure out who their families were so I can track living relatives.
Do you have links to the Dunn's?
Welcome to NZ.  I hope you enjoy the rugby and of course this great land of ours.
Go the All Blacks ;o)

Rgds

Donegal / TB Death at Carrickmagrath, Donegal
« on: Thursday 08 September 11 09:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello from NZ
I have a relative who was born and bred in Lanarkshire, Scotland, but who died of TB (consumption) after 5 months illness in Carrickmagrath, Donegal, Ireland in 1894.  His wife of 2 years remained in Lanarkshire, but his father from Paisley, Scotland was present at his death.
Any ideas why a Scotsman went to Carrickmagrath to die of TB???
Would there be a TB hospital there??

Hi thanks for your post
Isabella was born in 1870. She was the eldest of the siblings, followed by Andrew, James, Emma and Robert.
Her Father was Andrew Dunn born about 1845, died about 1887 in Lanarkshire.  Her Mother was Sarah Major of Liverpool, England.  Unsure of when she died, but it was after 1914.
Isabella first married John Docherty.  He died a short while later in Carrickmagrath, Donegal - Any ideas why a Scotsman who had TB (consumption) for 5 months would go to Carrickmagrath to die?
Isabella later married James Adair and lived at 54 Ravel Row until her death in 1950.  Looking for her resting place - how do I find that?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
Really would like to find living relatives, or people who knew Isabella.....
