Sorry, correction to my last post:

"Frances Canham has possibly, as a proud Uncle, named one of his sons Charles Daines Canham."

should read

Thomas Canham has possibly, as a proud Uncle, named one of his sons Charles Daines Canham.

Hi again

I think I may have solved the puzzle. I have found both Charles Daines and Mary Daines (nee Canham) on the Salford district, Lancashire census of 1841.

It appears Charles Daines (born c.1805) was a Sergeant Major with the 10th (North Lincolnshire Regiment) stationed at the Regent Road Infantry Barracks in Salford. Mary Daines (born c.1804) is listed as a soldiers wife. Their ages seem to be consistent with the wedding date of 1826 in Pulham St Mary the Virgin.

Frances Canham has possibly, as a proud Uncle, named one of his sons Charles Daines Canham.

I can find no mention of Charles or Mary Daines in 1851 census, perhaps stationed overseas? Does anybody have any military archives for this period for this regiment?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Yorkslass

Thank you so much for all the extra information.

I initially thought Frances Canham must have been a widow with her youngest son (Thomas) living at home, based on 1841 census information, and I would find older siblings and possibly her husband's death.

She was 36/37 when Thomas was born - possible I guess - given her possible occupation/trades 'Tailoress' (Thomas' birth record 1817) and 'Innkeeper'? in 1841 census - sounds like a single-minded, strong women!!

The Mary Canham and Charles Daines marriage is intriguing given Thomas named one of his sons Charles Daines Canham. I can find no record of a likely Charles Daines or Mary Daines (nee Canham) in 1841 or 1851 census records. Do you have birth dates for either? Would be I guess c.1800 to 1806? I will try looking for burials/death records for both now.

As you say lot's more digging to do. Thank you again.

Hi Keyboard86,

Thank you so much that makes sense now I have the answer!

Do you know if being a 'Tailoress' was an unusual trade for a women then? To me it sounds if there was a degree of training required for this profession and perhaps not usual. A 'seamstress' I would have thought would have been more common. Any insights would be very welcome.

Now, I just need to find where Frances was born and who her parents/brothers/sisters are!

Thank you again for your prompt response and your help - it is appreciated.

Regards

Hello Yorkslass

Thank you so much for all your help.

It is fantastic to actually see the Parish Register entries. I live in Australia (Sydney) so I am limited presently to web searches so this help is great and much appreciated. I will see if I can get a friend to take a trip to Pulham St Mary to look at the gravestone.

Can you make out trade or profession for Frances Canham on the baptism record for Thomas? Sorry I am new to this and cannot work out the word properly.

Thank you again for the tip on Familysearch.org

Regards

Looking for information on family of Frances Canham b.1781 - her son Thomas Canham b.1817.

1841 Census shows them both in Pulham St Mary, Norfolk - Frances is shown as not born in the county (Norfolk) - where was she born? Frances is shown as Innkeeper, possibly at Mead's Head as her son Thomas was publican c.1845-1847 before marying Eliza Sole and moving to Weeley, Essex.

Was Frances Canham unmarried or widowed? - any help would be greatly appreciated.
