Somerset / Re: Somerset family names
« on: Tuesday 02 March 21 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Anne

Welcome to Rootschat. These people are in my husband's family.

Emily Godfrey b 1842 at Compton Dundon, parents John Godfrey 1819-1876 and Eliza Cox born in Wells 1818.  Emily  married George Witcombe b Meare.

Richard Godfrey b 1778, died 1851 both at Edington had at least 2 children.
John Godfrey b 1811 who moved to Puriton
Daughter Ann Godfrey baptised at Meare in 1813, she married John Whitcombe 10 October 1847.

If you write messages with what you know,  e.g. who married who and a date. The more info you give on your message, the more likely people are able to make a connection with their family. If you need any help looking something up, there are often people who will help.

Good luck. Heather

« on: Thursday 18 February 21 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon

I am wondering whether any kind person has the burial records for Rushall. I am looking for Perry records including the burial of Thomas Perry in 1838 and his son Daniel who may have died around 1834.

Many thanks Heather

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Re: lived in Wiltshire gaoled in Somerset Why??

Hello Ken

I wonder where you found the records for James Parker. On An@@@try there are two records from 2 different books.

The first record 23 March 1835 comes from the Ilchester Gaol Felons Register 1833-1838
The second from the Description Book 1827-1838

The description book gives his age, physical appearance and gives his last abode as Wells, this is most likely why his trial was in Somerset. There are a couple of Elizabeth Fussell living in Wells.

There was another James Parker aged 19, tried 22 June 1839 sent to the Hulk shop in Gosport for stealing 4 half crowns and other money. Transported for 15 years.

Best wishes
Heather

Hi Suz

Thank you for the reply. I expect one of those family trees is mine. No one in the Whitcombe side of the family has a picture of Nancy, although Father in Law Jim has photos of Jeremiah and most of his children.

Best wishes Heather

This is a long shot, request from my Father in Law, Jim. Nancy Pugsley nee Whitcombe was born at Meare, she was Jim's Aunt and sadly died young. She married Dennis in 1960. Does anyone have any photos of Nancy and Dennis.
I have lots of info on them and Jim regularly visits their grave in Meare, along with the other Whitcombe families buried there.
Many thanks Heather

Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Burial lookup Boyce / Boice
« on: Wednesday 12 June 19 10:46 BST (UK)  »
Have you discounted William Boyce who was living in Somerset at the time of the 1881 and 1891 census?
1881 Evercreech, William Boyce. Occupation ag. lab aged 69 b Ditcheat. Married but no wife living with him or family.
1891 Shepton Mallet Union, William Boyce Occupation, labourer. b Ditcheat, aged 74. Married

There is a burial at Evercreech on the 30 January 1892 aged 73 years. Notes on burial say, From Shepton Mallet Union.

This is probably the same William Boyce in all three records given that it is quite an unusual surname.

Hi Alyn
There is a burial for a George Church at Stowey, Somerset, 16 July 1878 aged 76. The register gives his abode as Clutton Workhouse. He was also at the workhouse at the time of the 1871 census. His age at death gives his birth as 1802, so I think you may be able to rule his out as 'your' George as I think possible the one baptised 28 Mar 1802 at Chewton Mendip; son of William Church and Sarah Bendall. It looks as if this George married Martha Broad 2 October 1843 at Stowey, they were widow and widower. George was the son of William Church, labourer.

I just wondered out of interest where you found the burial for George Church in 1874.

Hi there

Have you looked at the John Wood, lodger living at Ospinge in 1861. 562/151/37 correct year of birth, giving his place of birth as Preston. Kent.

In 1871 he is at the Kings Head, Abbey Street Faversham, John Wood b Preston. with his is a Mrs Wood, born Faversham, but not the same year as Susan (Susanna). Have you found her in 1871

Can not find a John Wood in 1851 with that place of birth

Thanks for sharing the postcard and I was interested to read they were Dove Cottages. I drive past them often and Dove Cots Close driving to the Recycling Centre. Interesting to read a bit of local history.
Regards Heather :)
