Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Re: Edward Winter of Leybourne

You are most welcome. Maria Winter Day was my great grandmother. She married Thomas Henry Oldridge/Aldridge. He had been brought to Hull as a baby by his mother who was widowed one month before he was born. She had taken up with a chap called John Slipper and for many years he had been known as Thomas Henry Slipper. It takes some detective work this genealogy doesn't it? Not easy for me as I live in Cyprus!

Hi Derek, That came as a bolt from the blue but here's what I know. Maria and Edward Winter as far as I can see were not married. I believe that she was the sister of Sarah Day nee Atkin.
Maria was married to Harvey Scott and living in Hull at 84, Dixon's entry on the 1851 census. They had two boys John 13 and George 8.
In 1861 she is shown as living at 20, New George st,with Edward Winter, George and Sarah Day (her neice). Sarah Day gave birth to a daughter in August 1861 and she was registered as Maria Winter Day? Could have been Edward's child? Sarah then disappears.
Edward shows up on 1871 census at Dagger Lane, Hull with new wife Sophie nee Wilkinson. They married 1st quarter of 1861 but must have been after the census in April.

Maria is living in Saltor's court in 1871, her surname is down as Scott and she has her neice Maria Day living with her.

George Scoot Winter married Sarah Taylor  and had two children living with him at 4, Marsh st, Hull on the census for 1871

I haven't done any for ages so I think your jogging my memory might start me off again! Good hunting, June

Thank you very much for that teddybear,
I had been trying to find their mariage at Weasenham thinking of the bride's home. Did you happen to notice if John's surname was spelt with an O or A?

[private email removed to prevent misuse]    Is anyone able to help me please? I am looking for the marriage of John Aldridge of East  Dereham and Hannah (Cooke?) of Weasenham.  I have the census copies for all the years going back to 1841 but cannot get further back on either person. She was born c1797 and he c1785. Any help appreciated, I cannot get over to the U.K. often so rely on websites for research.

Thanks Geoff, I will see if I can follow that lead. It does seem a likely source as you say. I will let you know how I get on. Cheers, June

Any help appreciated on finding the birth/marriage of Edward Winter. Born approx 1817 in Leybourne but living in Hull from 1861 census until death in 1881.

Hi Bee,
That would be great if you managed to find the time, thanks. You certainly wouldn't recognised a lot of the island now, a lot of building going on in the north (occupied area) and the south.
We have been over to the occupied part of Nicosia and that is hardly developed, very poor and dilapidated mostly but further north they are building everywhere.
Still loads of animosity between the nationalities!

Hi Bee,
Thanks for your suggestion, my problem is the time span. They could have married anytime between 1901 and 1912!  They may also have married in another county as gran had relatives in Durham and Cumbria. I don't think the office at Beverley will be able to spend time trawling through 11yrs of wedding certs! I may have towait until I visit the U.K. again in the autumn.
I don't actually live in Limassol but in a tiny village north of there on the way to the Troodos mountains. My husband was stationed here in the early 60's with the R.A.F and you would see a great deal of change now.

Hi
Thanks very much for the info,it all helps to put flesh on the bones.
I live in the foothills of the Troodos mountains and yes it is lovely. Our village is so small we haven't got a tavern or a shop! About 40 or so scattered houses, a couple of goat farms and a beautiful church. It is idyllic but not suited to anyone who likes a nightlife!!
I have discovered only this week that there is a LDS centre just setting up in Limassol, about 45mins from me so I will go there next.
Thanks again
June
