Inverness / James and Isabella McIntosh
« on: Saturday 04 February 17 17:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, For many years I have researched James and Isabella McIntosh (nee Nisbet). They married in 1794, in Dunbar, whilst James was in the East Lothian Cavalry.  Their Children were all born in Edinburgh, namely James b 1807, David b 1809, William b 1812 (who I'm descended from) , and Jean Brown b 1816.
James Senior left the ELC in 1800 (but may have joined another unit) so there is quite a gap until the children arrived.  I've had no luck tracing William's brothers James and David, but Jean Brown married Robert Roycroft an ex Waterloo veteran and together with their family, sailed to New Zealand in 1847.  I'm in touch with the Roycroft descendants and James McIntosh Senior is No1 on their Family Tree.
So where did James and Isabella disappear to after the birth of their children?  I've recently unearthed an old 1841 Census record for the civil parish of Ardersier which gives a James McIntosh and his wife of the correct ages for my relatives.
They have an Elspeth McIntosh aged 25 and a John aged 8.  Knowing that there is a barracks nearby and thinking that one of his sons may have followed him into the Military is it too much to think that I've found James and Isabella at Last!
Can anyone assist in any way?
Kind Regards  Gordon McIntosh

Northumberland / Re: The Curry Family Stobbylee Farm.
« on: Saturday 13 September 14 17:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Sorry for the delay but we have just returned from holiday.
I found the following in my records (N.B. the Curry's are legion in the area) :-
Slaley Volume 6 Marriages 1754-1812, 1792 May 29.
Robert Curry of the Parish of Shotley and Cicely Cook of this Parish by Licence,
Witnesses George Ward, Richard Close and Cicely Hutchinson.

So it appears this is another Curry line.
I think my Curry's had left Stobbylee East Farm by the time your relatives arrived. Note the Farm still  exists as a single farm.

Antrim / The Dunachie Family (Various Spellings)
« on: Monday 21 July 14 18:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi, My wife's maiden name is Dunachie.  Her grandfather was John Ross Dunachie, a cabinet maker, who lived all of his life on Tyneside.
His father, another John, was a shoemaker, who was born in Glasgow in 1852.  He came down to Tyneside and in 1875 he married Janet Ross.
On their wedding certificate John's father, of the same name, was stated to be a Hatter.  It was aso John, the shoemaker's second marriage.
Through the Hatter connection I have traced the Family back to Glasgow and learned they arrived there from Ireland c. 1848.  However the spelling of the Dunachie name varies somewhat in the Glasgow Census Records :-
1871 John Donachie
1861 John Doneghy
1851 John Donaghy
John's wife was given as Margaret Badger in the census records.
Then I found a Marriage record (Via Roots Ireland ) for John Donoughy and Margaret Badger dated 23rd November 1841.  They were married at St. Patricks RC Church Belfast.

Another Dunachie researcher has provided me with a Death Notice for John Donaghy, the hatter, who died in 1873 in Glasgow.  His father is given as Arthur Donaghy, Linen Weaver, and his mother is named as Sarah Neil, both deceased.

Can anyone please provide further info on :- Arthur Donaghy, the Weaver, or Sarah Neil his wife, or indeed Margaret Badger,John, the Hatter's wife.

The other Dunachie researcher is descended from John and Janet's daughter Sarah, so the family kept the Sarah name going.  They live in Australia.

Many thanks.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: My McIntosh Family and my yDNA.
« on: Monday 10 March 14 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Re William's siblings and parents.  For many years I had thought that William's parents were James McIntosh and Isabella Nisbet.  They married in Dunbar in 1794, whilst James was in the East Lothian Cavalry.  They had children James (b. 1807), David (b. 1809), William (b. 1812) and Jean Brown McIntosh (b. 1816), all born in Edinburgh.  Whilst I was unable to trace the parents, and  brothers James and David, I was able to trace Jean Brown, as she married Robert Roycroft, a Waterloo Veteran, and the Family sailed to New Zealand in 1847 to start the Roycroft Dynasty there.  I am in touch with many of them and James McIntosh is No.1 in their Family Tree!
The proof that William was James' son is rather nebulous, so I was advised by a paid researcher to discount it.  Hence I know of none of William's earlier relatives.  I suppose this 'brick wall' led me to have my DNA tested.  When the Hayes match turned up and this lead me to be 'suspicious' of the Jessie's children born prior to her marriage to William.
Regards & Thanks,  Gordon McIntosh

Hi, Thanks for the input.  I'll consider upgrading to a 67 marker test.  Perhaps I should ask to join the Hayes Project Group as they seem to have many more participants than the McIntosh Group.  One of the Hayes I was matched with had taken the 67 marker test.  How significant is it that I match so closely with a Hayes? Only a slight difference on one marker seems a good match to me!

Hi , Thanks for your help.
My matches for 37 Markers are :-
Steps
  2       John Hayes
  3       Terry Lee Hayes
  3       James Herbert Hayes

I have also uploaded my results to y search and have compared my results with a Hayes result       ( user 2ZSC6) and my results over 25 markers match exactly with his apart from marker DYS 385B, where my result is 15 and his is 14. Again compared with another Hays ( TZBVB) this time over 37 markers I again match exactly, except for marker DYS 385b, where my result is 15 and and his is 14.
All of the Hay(e)s Families are in USA and I have emailed  them. My ysearch ID is GWE3M and password is Clement.
What do you advise?

Hi,

Many thanks for the info. Yes I am a member of the McIntosh Group and I am in contact with an administrator in NZ who thinks my results are 'odd'.  The Hayes group is new to me so I'll investigate. My yDNA is  R1b1a2.

Many thanks,

Gordon McIntosh
