Quick work people! Thanks a lot.

Doran 54 -No sorry the Wedding in question was November 1811 -Marldon  in Devon -John Pengelly to Mary Wotton.-(Hence John Wotton Pengelly as first born son)

When I first started doing this (years ago) I miss read the Place of Birth on her Census forms and started on that Mardon Cornwall -Pengelly tree and did have the Mary Freethy 1804 wedding as the most likely one, then eventually realised that it said Marldon near Totnes in Devon .That is part of the trouble having such common christian names as John and Mary ,to many possibles. Thanks for your time and trouble.

vronlady -That looks very interesting -The DOB 1815 looks right ,So does Stoke Damerell ,near to Stonehouse where John Wotton was born in 1813,and the name Sidonia obviously stands out a mile.-I wonder if she was a daughter of theirs that possibly died young and they named a later  Daughter Sidonia Sarah when she was born on Guernsey in around 1826 ,which would make the census details correct?..
It always seemed strange to me that they marry in 1811 - and the only children I know of are born in 1813 ,1818, then nothing till 1825 ish when they have 3 more, seems like there could have been  quite a few more born and maybe  died..... here and possibly in Guernsey?.

Thanks again for your help

Looking for any help with the children of John and Mary Pengelly
They were married in Marldon Devon 1811 ,and they had John Wotton Pengelly (Stonehouse 1813) and Mary (Brixham 1818) in Devon and according to English Census details a futher 3 in Guernsey, Sedonia Sarah ,Ellen and Thomas Theodore sometime around 1820-1830 approx.

I would love to be able to find out when and where they were  born ,and if there were more of them, did they stay ?.No idea when they went over and how long they stayed all I have is sometime between 1818 (Marys Birth) and by the 1841 census when they were in London .The father John was a carpenter and was presumably working on one of the many buildings being built on the Island,is it possible they would have been on the 1827 census?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thankyou -Peter. That is something I never knew or have ever come across.
I am not the only one as Googling ;Richord did not  get one hit,and there are quite a few people on Babies Name sites  asking for a female version of Richard and nobody has mentioned Richord
so it seems to have died out quite a while ago .

and Thankyou -hanes teulu ,for your FindMyPast information which I have now found on Ancestry along with Richord Gee (female) baptised 7 Nov 1679 Newton Ferrers to Nicholas and Ann Gee,correct dates and location for a good match as the same person.

p.s Googling Richord Gee brings up "do you mean Richard Gere?"

Thanks again
Paul

Devon Lookup Requests / Yeampton Parish records 1700's -Can anybody help with this?
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
 Hi
According to England Select Births and Yealmpton Parish records on IGI Devon.

Richaurd Pengilley was Baptised 24 Nov 1710 and sadly died 21 Feb 1711 his/her parents were Henry and Richaurd Pengilley.

There are a another 4 children born in that period in Yealmpton to a Henry Pengilley sadly only one has the wife's name and that is for Samuell, Baptised 7 Feb 1720 to Henry and a Richord. (England Births & Christenings)

Is there anyone out there who has access to the records who can decipher what Henry's wife was called.
Thanks for reading

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Jacob Pengelly -Will 1726 -Latin Translation ?
« on: Wednesday 31 December 14 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
Vow Bookbox you have really excelled yourself that is amazing ,thankyou so much ,this is really above and beyond anything I was expecting

I eventually found the other two wills on ancestry ,the ones in English but as you say they are completely different to the Latin one in which only Henry is mentioned.
That would have been my next query had you not already answered it why were the two wills so completely different now I know.
It shouldn't be a  suprise that there was a court case as that  seems to be a family trait ,there is mention of an award for dept of £240 for Winifred Ellacott (Jacob Pengellys Daughter) against a John Ellacott  (Husband or Father -in -law?) in 1723.
And there was a bit of a fuss when the Rev Henry Pengelly "forgot" to distribute the alms to the poor every year as his ancestor had stipulated, but he seems to have died before the case was closed.

Unfortunately with Jacob having no male issue it looks like I will have to look for  another possible link between my line and theirs but I am sure there is a connection somewhere I just haven't found it yet.

Thanks again for your invaluable help

Devon Lookup Requests / Jacob Pengelly -Will 1726 -Latin Translation ?
« on: Tuesday 30 December 14 12:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Spent the last couple of days pouring over the will of a JACOB PENGELLY dated 26 May 1726 -Peter Tavy (listed on "Ancestry") ,my first encounter with a will written in Latin ! a whole new layer of argghhh ,not only cannot read the writting but is that a persons name or an item of his estate?

I eventually worked out a Winfred and John Ellacott  mentioned ,which when I cross reference it against the Devon Consolidated Wills ("Find my Past " ?) I come up with an entry for a Winifred Ellacott, alias Cole alias Clarke alias Pengelly !! ,will dated 1732  she married 3 times ? and Pengelly was her maiden name?

A trawl through IGI gives me a Winifred (Mrs) Cole marries John Ellacott 1720 and a Winifred Ellacott marries a Peers Clarke 1732 which all seems to fit nicely but cannot get a marriage for her to a Cole or any deaths for her husbands or dates of birth .
And I still don't know what her relationship is to Jacob Pengelly  who seems to have been a Bachelor of Physic / Medicine and looks to be part of the Sortridge Pengelly's.

Any brave souls out there who  can understand/translate Latin and can help me find out how they are related would be greatly appreciated.

And a Happy New Year to all fellow "searchers"

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: John Pengelly -Of Devonport 1780/90's ?
« on: Thursday 04 December 14 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
 Cheers !

I have (eventually) found the John Pengilly 1792 you had located ,funny I had been on IGI and I swear that was not shown ,I never seem to get on that well with that site.

Anyway thanks a lot that looks to be the best match I have seen .

On my recent visit to IGI I had  found what looks to be 3 other children born to a Jacob and Elizabeth Pengelly in Stoke Damerel :Jacob 1786 - Mary 1788 with a gap that John fits into nicely at 1792 before Sarah 1794 so that is another point in its favour.

Thanks again for a job well done .

Devon Lookup Requests / John Pengelly -Of Devonport 1780/90's ?
« on: Wednesday 03 December 14 16:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My GGG-Grandfather a John Pengelly was born sometime in the 1780/1790's.
He dies in 1878 aged 86 making his date of birth 1792ish
On the 1851 census his place of birth is Devonport ,1861 Devon and in 1871 it is Newport,Devon .

I was always of the opinion that Newport was just that the New port in Plymouth which later became known as Devonport, rather than Newport which is an area near Barnstable ? Is this a reasonable assumption? Or am I looking in the wrong area ?

The area of Devonport is/was? in the parish of Stoke Damerel ,I am unable to get to Devon at the moment would it be possible for some kind soul to do a search for any Pengelly Baptisms in the 1780-1790s period in the parish.
On IGI I have found one John in that time period and that is for the 20th April 1780 but that seems a little too early to me .

Thanks
Paul

Had a good look on Forest of Dean Family History site ,and found

the burial of Ellen Pengelly 1924 in Tutshill
the marriage of William Evans to  Margaret Agnes Stephenson in 1909 in Pauntley
the burial of William Evans in 1945 in Tutshill
but no burial for Margaret Agnes Evans ,I have a possible death in 1974 Westbury Gloucester .

unfortunately no wills ,or Monumental Inscriptions for any of them

So it looks like I will have to have a good nose around all the gravestones in St Luke in case they have one .
