World War One / Re: Help with ancestor in Army Service Corps

Thanks so much Max D - even with gaps, this info is fantastic for us! It makes it much easier to visualise what he might have been experiencing, and his role. Thanks!

Thanks guys for your help so far.

MaxD - Henry Edward Ansell, when he joined service corps 28/12/14 regimental number is 031678
Says he had previous service with Royal Sussex Reg 1999-1902 (I think) - 1901 census backs this up as he is at Chichester Barracks with Royal Sussex Regiment
Born 20 Jan 1879, west Firle, Sussex
Looks like he was promoted to sergeant ver time and seems to have joined up again in 1921
I can't glean much else from the service records pages as I can understand so few of the abbreviations!  ::)

World War One / Help with ancestor in Army Service Corps

I've just found a service record for an ancestor who enlisted dec 1914 in the army service corps. (Presumably because he was a motor driver). It says he embarked for France 6 Aug 1916 (British expeditionary force). before this on the record i can decipher a note saying (I think) 34 section HAMT. earlier it also says Guildford ASCMT
Can anyone give me any clues about using this info to find out a little more? Basically I'd just like to find out where in France he was sent to and maybe which battles his unit helped with.
My skills when it comes to military records are very poor!
Thanks very much

Thank you Sinann for those links! I think I will fax the form and order a copy. I hadn't come across that one and it seems simple.

We believe he had two sisters, Betty and Maureen, but whether they were older or younger is unknown.

He didn't marry until 1951. (I have just ordered that certificate). And no, I have no other info at all except his full name and a probable date of birth 6/5/1920, no info about his father at all.

Apologies if there is an obvious answer to this question - I'm new to Irish genealogy! I want to order the birth certificate of a John Michal Halpin, born AMJ 1920 in Belfast (I found an index record via family search and ancestry vol 1 / page 244 and a family member recalls his birthday as 6 May but has no other info). I am wanting to identify his parents and any other info.
However, the sites I have found for ordering a copy of the certificate require the mother's maiden name (I read somewhere that this was given in the index after 1903) - but the record I have found does not give this.
Can I still order the certificate?
Is there another index I can search which might provide the maiden name?
I'm also a little confused as to which is the best site to order a certificate via - there seem to be quite a few!
Any guidance would be appreciated, many thanks

I wonder if he had previous military experience? As otherwise surely it would have been relatively unusual for a man with family in his late 40s at the beginning of WW1 to enlist? Would that link in with the TF connection? I'm no expert...
They were often a bit inaccurate with their age, and sometimes on purpose - although perhaps an 11 year discrepancy is pushing it. Haven't found any other possibilities though.

The medal card is also on ancestry.co.uk - Northumberland Fusiliers Cl P
Gives date of enlistment as 10 Nov 1914, date of discharge 8 Apr 1918
Also gives a cause of discharge - I think it's
A.0.265/14
2.B.I
Might be a site that helps decipher this abbreviation?

On 1911 census there's an Edward Lauderdale age 49 born Bellingham Northumberland , worker in coal mine, living at 45 Derwentside Cottages, Ebchester, Medomsley, Durham, with wife Mary and 2 daughters Ada Lauderdale, 10, and Sarah Wood Lauderdale, 5. Could this be him? (Census indicates there were 8 other children)
