Hi Jericho, I realise it's been many years, but I am researching the Shorter family - you may already know this, but Stephen Westbrook is mentioned in the 1723 will of Robert Shorter, as the husband of Robert's sister (presumably Alice). I cannot find a baptism for Alice sadly - Robert may have been bapt in 1674 the son of Thomas and Alice... the mother's name does suggest a daughter might have been named after her, but nothing found.

Hi, it's been a long time but hopefully you are still researching this family. I have recently discovered that my 6x great grandfather was Robert Shorter of Easthamstead who died in 1768. I have his will which proves his daughter Ann married into the Trickey family of Wokingham (my connection), and it mentions lots of other relatives besides his children, including two brothers, a nephew, an uncle and a cousin. Just wondered if anyone might know more about this family.
thanks
J

Hehe, being a Midlands girl I'm no Devon expert I'm afraid! I admit that I use maps a lot myself - the 'directions' function on google maps is particularly useful to me since it's a quick way of finding out if two villages are miles apart or pretty close!

No problem! If you need any look ups on Ancestry UK (censuses etc) give me a shout, sadly I don't think they have Devon parish registers yet.

Genuki is a good resource for UK family history material - this might be of interest.

By the way - on the 1841 there is a 15 year old Elizabeth Giles (bear in mind ages on the 1841 were often rounded to the nearest 5 for anyone over 15) living with a 70 year old Ann SIMMONS in East Stonehouse which is part of Plymouth. Perhaps one or both parents died.

Hi again Tom! Baptisms didn't always happen immediately after the birth, so I see no reason why that one from 1828 couldn't be the right one (that's not to say it is of course!). I have several from my family where the child was anywhere from 3 to 10.

You won't find birth or marriage certificates for the period you're looking for since they didn't come in until 1837 - Parish registers are your only hope I'm afraid, and at that time they only give so much detail (no mother's maiden name on the baptism, and no parents'  names on marriages, usually). I would ask here in the forums for help checking the Ashburton register to see if there's a marriage there for John and Elizabeth prior to 1825.

Good Luck!

The second witness, I see an "r" near the end, possibly ending "dry".   Maybe Hendry.

It does look a bit like an r, but compare with the second letter - I think they are both e's written like a curvy E.

On first glance it looks like Simmons (on second glance I thought the initial was an R, but I think the i is just hiding under the S!).

The first witness looks like Francis Collander; the second possibly R Healey?

Hey, me again  :)
Also just noticed that your George is living on Lister Street in 1841 - this is where my William and his sons William and Elijah were living at least in the 1820s when the sons were baptised. There was possibly also a daughter Elizabeth. I still don't know for sure that George was related.
