Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Re: house search - Bryngwyn Manor house - Wormelow
« on: Tuesday 13 December 11 20:15 GMT (UK)  »
Bryngwyn was built in the mid-1870's for Sir James Rankin, MP, JP at the cost of £15,000.

My gt. grandfather, W E Martin was an architect working for F R Kempson, the man credited with the design of Bryngwyn and also the Library in Broad Street.  My gt. grandfather has listed Bryngwyn among the many mansions on which he worked in the 1870/1880s.

The mansion was requisitioned during the last war and used to house Italian prisoners of war.  Much damage was done to the fabric of the building during that period and dry-rot had set in when my family again took an interest in it.  It was later converted into flats/apartments.

There is a great deal of information about the Rankin family and Bryngwyn in the Library in Hereford.

Hello Chilis,

I was very interested to hear that your great grandfather worked for Frederick Kempson and that you have a record of houses on which they worked. I'm researching another house in Herefordshire - Belmont House. I think that Kempson may have been involved - do you have any record of the practice doing work there?

I shall be hugely grateful for any help you can offer,

Cracknor
