Hi Fishknox, delighted to hear from you. Sorry - I have only just seen your message now. I had stopped researching the family for the past few years. Let me know if you see this

Hi Martin,
yes there is a mistake in the way the children's names are entered in the service record. The names of Nellie and Catherine (Katie) are transposed. Just a clerical error I presume, before the days of Tippex or a Delete button !

thanks for your help,
Fiona

What a kind offer - many thanks! as to which church .... the family was Catholic as far as I know. The baptism was carried out by a Rev Hugh McFarlane. No more info on the cert than that I'm afraid !

Hi Jebber, good point re Census - I had seen that okay but it is Nellie's son who has the story that she was born "on the move" so I decided to check it out on his behalf.

The family were together in India since 1904 so would they have travelled back together on a troop ship I wonder? There would have been 4 small children making the journey from India - Nellie was number 5 in the family.

Are there ships' records anywhere that give troop movements information? Were there ships specially dedicated to transporting troops around the world ?

Thanks BumblB - I'm hoping someone will come into this discussion who can tell me that ! Her brother was born in Jalapahar, India in Oct 1906 so presumably they were in transit from India to England when she was born, or just before she was born. However, this is just speculation on my part and someone may have a more accurate account of their movements!

Yes, it is very different from the one for the birth of her brother in York barracks but is the exact same format as those of her two brothers born in India. This may be an indication that she was not actually born in England?
Thanks again, Fiona

Helen (Nellie) McGovern was born 6 - 9 -1908 to sergeant John McGovern 3203 West Riding Regt and Ellen Brosnan.  She was baptised at Lichfield 4 - 10 - 1908. The family believe she was not actually born in Lichfield but in transit somewhere, perhaps on board a ship. Is there any way of checking this? The birth cert of her brother John in 1903 specifies that he was born in the Married Quarters at York army barracks. However, Nellies birthplace is not specified on her cert.
thanks, Fiona
