Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Help appreciated
« on: Friday 07 April 23 11:11 BST (UK)  »
I have just had a quick play on there, it suggests 73.68% that RM is my Half Great-Uncle.

I wish I had matches from EM's brother's descendants, but perhaps I'll just need to look harder/be more patient.

Thank you!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Help appreciated
« on: Friday 07 April 23 09:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am trying to identify the biological father of CS - my biological grandfather. I suspect CS’s birth certificate to list the incorrect father (I suspect this as my DNA results currently have no links to the listed father, and a bunch to another male). Although I do appreciate that DNA is somewhat random and its possible matches could appear in the future.

CS’s mother was HD (I match to her ancestors). HD was married to the birth certificate father at the time of CS’s birth. CS was born the 6th child of 7 to this couple in 1902 and was named after the birth certificate father (also CS).

The man I suspect to be the true father is EM, also known as HH. EM was a convicted bigamist and lived a very colourful life to say the least. One of his son’s (RM) has uploaded a DNA test and matches to me at 394cM. I have tried to make contact with RM several times, but have not yet had any luck.

RM’s brother is deceased, but his children (EM’s grandchildren) have also uploaded tests and I match to them as follows:
    255cM
    207cM

And their children (EM’s great grandchildren):
    181cM
    170cM
    159cM
    156cM
    144cM
    128cM
    126cM
    124cM
    110cM
    109cM
    107cM
    103cM

There is also an unknown shared match at 374cM. I have not yet had any luck making contact with them or connecting them into the tree. They do not have a family tree uploaded to refer to.

EM had two brothers, I haven’t found any descendants of them on any database yet (but I will keep searching). They were all of the right age to be a potential father.

I cannot conclusively link EM or his two brothers to the same local area as HD at the time of CS’s conception, but they were all in the Royal Navy. They all lived in a similar but broader area of the UK.

I have seen some photos of EM and one of his grandchildren, and there is a strong familial resemblance.

Am I jumping to too many conclusions, or is there a strong chance either EM or his two brothers is the biological father to CS? It’s one of those brick walls that I feel I have been staring at for too long and need a new set of eyes to look at it. I don’t believe I will ever find a paper trail for this, and that DNA is my only way of putting it to bed.

Thank you in advance,

The Common Room / Cornelius Cyril Smith Lookup Request
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 20:35 BST (UK)  »
Hiya,

I'm desperately looking for help tracking down information relating to my great grandfather.

My grandfather was born out of wedlock, and all I know from his Barnardo's record is that his father is named as Cornelius Cyril Smith, aged 23 (born approx 1901/1902). He was a Corporal stationed in India at the time with the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment in the summer of 1924, which is where he met my great grandmother.

This is a whole side of my family that I have no idea about, and the surname Smith is not particularly helpful. I would assume from his regiment that he was from the Lincolnshire area - but that is purely an assumption. My DNA results do, however, support this.

His approx birth year means it's unlikely military records exist in the public domain for him, but just to find a birth index for him would be wonderful.

Any help greatly received!

Kent / Sevenoaks Rail Crash 1884
« on: Wednesday 14 August 13 00:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for any information on the Sevenoaks rail crash that killed my 3 x G Granddad in 1884. I've only very recently discovered it was the cause of his death and so far all I know about it is the bare details and a photo. I've tried to look into newspaper archives as surely it would have been covered but the only stories I can find are on the British newspaper archives, with whom I don't have a subscription. I'd really like to know a bit more about the accident that sadly took his life

Any information would be much appreciated,

Thanks,

Yes she is an interesting lady - so many children before marriage and I've found two more!
Abraham b and bp  at Thistleton2/11/1828 Illegit  - Frances being of Exton
William Cockshaw Tuyckwood (is this middle name a clue to the father?) b 29/4/1825 and bp 8/5/1825 at Thistleton illegit s/o Frances.

I forgot to add, also thanks for this! I'll try and look into William Cockshaw Tuckwood as this is the only one with a possible clue to a fathers name!

Thank you so much, that has been incredibly helpful!

She's the first person I've come across in my tree to have so many illegitimate children!

I'll look into those names, especially possible parents. Thank you, I really was at a bit of a loss of how to continue!

Thanks so much for looking!

Annoyingly I don't know anything else about her at all, but I find her really interesting! The only reason I have for her birthplace being Exton is census records and the birth place of her children being local, so that's not the most reliable source! There are also links to Lincolnshire which isn't surprising given the proximity, I suppose it's possible that she was born in Lincs. I also can't be certain that Tuckwood is in fact her maiden name, but it was the name given to all her illegitimate children and the name she married under

Thanks also for the name of an extra child!
