Hi Andy Gibson,
If my memory is right, you may be related to Jim Meikle whose grandfather, Alexander MacLean, was the only son from the marriage of Margaret Scott and John MacLean born Helmsdale 1832. Alexander was born in England but brought up in Helmsdale by his uncle, Alexander, the brother of John. Sadly, his first wife, Margaret died of TB soon after the birth and John MacLean married again to Elizabeth Gray and spent the rest of his life in Wallsend and had other children.
The first of these was John Malcolm Maclean, who after many years working for the Cooperative Society and becoming a manager, emigrated to Canada and became Secretary of The Cooperative Society of Canada at its head office at Sydney Mines, Novascotia. When he emigrated he claimed to be only 45, though in fact was 50. He had married, just before emigrating, Miriam Mary Clark, age 22 years. I have a copy of the marriage certificate in front of me where John Malcolm MacLean claims to be only 42. They had a son, John, certainly alive last year, whose daughter, Ann MacDiamid has been in contact with me. Such was the age confusion of John Malcolm Maclean that his identity could only be confirmed by knowing the day and month in which he celebrated his birthday (known from birth cert).
I think Jim Meikle would agree that my research opened up a whole new field for him and unblocked the researches of Ann MacDiamid. Although I have taken the name 'Helmsdale' I am in no way related to John MaClean, although living in Gateshead on Tyne I understand the environment of Felling, Heworth and Wallsend, not to mention the Pelton/Beamish area where John Malcolm became a Cooperative Society manager.
My connection is as a friend of Charlotta Maria Gudmundsdottir who lives near Reykjavik whose life is contingent to a certain cooper, John MacLean, who came to Iceland in the early 1860s and fathered an illegitimate child. In Icelandic records, his date of birth was 1840 and birthplace, Helmsdale. If this is correct, he cannot be the son of Alexander, the shoemaker and born in 1832.
This must be considered the latest state of play, and has nothing to do with the false trails early in this thread. Jim Meikle and Jon Hjaltason believe the DoB in the Islendigabok to be an error but it is a 'fly in the ointment' for the researches of Charlotta and Jon, who are related.
You mention other information. Of course, if you have found another John MacLean born around 1840 at Helmsdale, I would be very interested.

Kind Regards, Helmsdale.

Hello Fifer,
Thanks for your help. Your reply came on the day I went off on holiday and I have just returned. As I said in my original post, we have an almost complete CV of the John Maclean born 1832 in Helmsdale to Alexander Maclean, a shoemaker, until he died 1906 in Wallsend, Tynemouth, but the date of birth in Islendingabók is 1840, Helmsdale. This may have been a guess as the woman was certainly born in 1841.
That link you gave refers to Stoer in Morayshire, but I can find no such place there. However, in my earlier search, I did find a John Maclean born around 1840 at Assynt, and in a later census at Stoer, which certainly exists in the area. Could there be some confusion in Family Search?
Regards,
             Helmsdale
PS. It now appears that Charlotta, the child's first name, was taken from an earlier ancestor in Iceland.

John Maclean of Helmsdale

It is known that during the 1860s the firm of Henderson, Glasgow, had a branch in Reykjavik Iceland for the purpose of exporting fish products to Britain. It is also recorded that on April 27 1862 the post ship Arcturus arrived in Iceland carrying four scotsmen to work at the plant, one of which may well have been John Maclean of Helmsdale. He was a journeyman cooper and his job may have been the building of barrels for salt fish. He may have left Iceland in late 1863. However, while in Iceland he met María Elisabet Kristjánsdottir and she named him as the father of the child she gave birth to in the Spring of 1864, Charlotta María Jónsdottir. The famous Icelandic book of genealogy, Islendingabók names the father as John MacLean of Helmsdale, born 1840.
I have identified a John Maclean, born Helmsdale 1832, father Alexander a shoemaker. There is reason to distrust the Icelandic date and Helmsdale could have been a general description. He appears to have left Iceland before the child was born and may have left the impression that he would return. If he gave his true date of birth 1840, I cannot find any other John MacLean of Helmsdale. In naming the child, María comes from the mother and it is possible that the father suggested the name Charlotte/charlotta, as the letter 'C' does not exist in the language. John Maclean may have had a relative with that name or often mentioned such a person.
The CV of John MacLean born 1832 is known until he died in Wallsend on Tyne in 1906 and there is a gap when he could have been in Iceland, but this is not proof. I would be obliged if someone can suggest another John Maclean born in the general area of Helmsdale born around 1840 and known to have gone to Iceland or who was related or connected in some way with someone called Charlotte, as that name seems to have been quite common around Helmsdale.

Regards,
             Helmsdale

Hello again Radcliff:
Find my Past : Death.

McLean Elizabeth H.
Chester le Street
Durham
Year of registration 1934
Quarter of registration Oct - Dec
Age at Death 64
Volume No 10a
Page number 476

If this is the wife of John McLean of Airlie (the name of his house in Novascotia) he certainly was not a widower in 1920 when he married Miriam Clark. He could have been divorced but concealed this: otherwise he was still legally married.

Regards,
       Helmsdale

Thank you Radcliff: I think that John McLean of Helmsdale 1832 -1906, by the end of his working life, was probably using his skills in the shipyards, but the fact that this form of words appears in the marriage cert. in 1903 (E. Hannah Hall) Chester le Street, and 1920 (Miriam Clark) Tynemouth Register office, suggests they are one and the same John Malcolm McLean, his son. Miriam Clark was 22 and J. McLean 50, but age understated.
In each case he claims to be a widower, suggesting the earlier marriage in 1891. Elizabeth H McLean, nee Hall appears to have died in 1934, so claim of widower is odd, which is why I seek certainty.
Until the Canadian connection was discovered by pure chance the Canadian lady and her father knew nothing of Helmsdale, only a word that sounded similar. They accept John Mclean, B 1870 Felling because of the month and day he celebrated his birthday. However, over 20 years ago she came to UK to find her roots, but without success.
I am certainly inclined to believe that he spent most of his working life in the Pelton/Beamish area, but the Canadian lady wonders whether we have the right person even though family tradition is that he had been married previously. Must check death of E. Hannah McLean, nee Hall again.
Thanks for the details of the Co-operative archive: I am sure we could find a lot of answers there.

Regards,
Helmsdale

I wonder if there is some where that has the coop workers records, perhaps Beamish museum may be able to advise you,

Thanks Radcliff: I started looking for archives but got lost in a maze.

Fact: Register off. wedding cert. John McLean master grocer widower 42?/ Miriam Clark spinster 22, 21/4/1920.... father J. McLean (deceased) marine engineer (actually cooper) Emigration Canada 19/71920..... living descendents there. Understated age 5 years on emigration document.

Fact: Wesleyan chapel, Chester le street. wedding cert. 26/2/1893 (A) John McLean 23 - 25? widower grocer journeyman, married Elizabeth Hannah Hall, spinster..... Father J. McLean marine engineer

NB. Both widowers at marriage and both cooper fathers claimed to be marine engineers. Same people ?

Free BMD.. Marriage March 1891 John McLean to Jane Ann Stewart.
Free BMD...Death March 1891 Jane Ann McLean

I believe that the three John McCleans are the same. I would be interested in your judgement Radcliff.

Continued...
JenB. I agree... distance of little consequence.. but I have my reasons for looking for a second possible fit north of the Tyne :) And yes, the coincidence is striking but not proof. When he married Miriam in 1920 he also said his father was a Marine Engineer.... another coincidence :)

Radcliff:
Move on. We have the cert for the marriage. Wesleyan Chapel, Chester le Street, 26/2/1893.. John McLean, age 23 or 25, widower, grocer journeyman, Elizabeth H Hall, spinster 22. This was 3 years before father's death and he says he is a marine engineer though father has always claimed to be a cooper. Hall's father miner. NB. in 1920 Register office wedding J. McLean's father also claimed to be a marine engineer.

Karenlee:
Thanks for linking the two professions in 1911 and Canada., also clarification.

Karenlee: Does this mean?
I have an 1891`image.. Find My Past for Stewart Family, Cooperative Terrace , Pelton. John McLean 24,  boarder, widower, grocer DoB 1867, Born Wallsend. The DoB is wrong and PoB is wrong... Head of house error? I do not have 1901 census but your info makes sense.

Helmsdale

Hi, first thanks to all who have made very useful contributions. If I may, I will work in reverse.

Radcliff: Cerificate purchased, John McLean married Elizabeth Hannah Hall, 26/2/1893. Widower- grocer journeyman - father John, marine engineer (he always says he's a cooper) Wesley chapel, Chester le Street

JenB: Sorry to confuse. We know John Malcolm McLean, B Felling 1870 is the same who married Miriam Clark in 1820 and emigrated to Canada same year (Proof, celebrated birthday on day of month according to B Cert.) It is certainty that I am seeking between 1891 and 1920, but he may well have been CWS general manager, Pelton/Beamish census 1911.

Radcliff: How on Earth ? .... Another researcher finds that Elizabeth Hannah Hall died in 1834. This researcher is the grandson of Alexander McLean, B Felling 1865 only son of John McLean B Helmsdale 1832 and Margaret Scott.

Radcliff: I note this... thanks.  Elizabeth H Hall, aged 20, hardware shop woman, born Pelton.

Radcliff: Elizabeth Cumming, granddaughter aged 7 born , West Bowden, Leicestershire. Birthplace known.. she was 18 when appears in 1911 census living at Beamish with H. Hall and J McLean, general CWS manager.

Continue to JenB in another window, Regards, Helmsdale.

Hi Karenlee,
thanks again for your reply. I have this already, but it is good to know that you also end up here:
"1891 Census England Durham Pelton
RG12/4121/132/3
Cooperative Terrace
In the household of Samuel and Margaret STEWART
John MCLEAN Boarder Widower 24 Grocer Northumberland Wallsend."

I dont seem to have this:
"1901 Census England Durham Pelton
RG13/4699/188/33
Victoria Buildings"

What date is the following? Does it relate to Victoria Buildings above? : "
MCLEAN
John Head Marr 30 Assistant in Hardware Shop Durham Felling
Elizabeth H Wife 30 Durham West Pelton."

Then you say :
"Not able to give full details from the 1911 Census." ... Have you given any details of this above?
I have a 1911 census that puts a John Maclean, general manager CWS living at Wood View with wife Elizabeth H and Elizabeth Cumming, Neice, at Beamish/ Pelton.

Clearly, nothing that you have found so far puts the emigrant, John Maclean, in Northumberland during his working life. After emigration he became the secretary of the British Canadian Cooperative Society.

Ann Macdiarmid's father is still alive and they know that her grandfather was married before he married Miriam Clark in 1920. Previously they knew nothing of a possible marriage to Elizabeth H in 1893, nor a previous to Jane Anne Stewart when he was 20 and she was 19.

My quest for the emigrant's CV in the Northeast is to try and discover if we are confusing the lives of two different John Maclean's.

Thanks again, Regards, Helmsdale.
