Hi Spendlow and Willsmum thanks for getting back to me.  To answer you both on the 1911 Census I have Joseph Boot married to Susannah Boot.  Solomon Boot was born at Shirebrook.  Joseph and Harvey Dye by Susannah's previous husband Thomas Dye (deceased) were on the census as sons of Joseph Boot so he must have adopted them.  The address I have them living at is No 31 Cross Street, Whinney Hill, Dalton Brook, Nr Rotherham.  I don't have a death date for Joseph Boot or Round but Susannah I have as dying in 1940 aged 63.  My mum who is still alive, remembers the names Boot and Round.  She thought Uncle Sol's surname was Boot but also a grandad Round, she said he was a lovely man and if it had not been for him she would not be alive but she's not able to give me more as her memory is not good.  I know my mothers family were quite poor (my grandfather being Harvey Dye) but other than some drunken behaviour for a Thomas Dye yet to be proved as my Thomas I can find no other evidence of criminal activity.  Like you I could not find a 3rd marriage yet Joseph Round had three daughters (my mums Aunts and I remember meeting one of them as a child) Lillian Round born 1907, Edith Agnes Round born 1909 and Sarah Round born 1911, which does not tie in at all with Joseph Boot as at least two of the girls should have been on the 1911 census if they were the same man - so you can see why I am in a pickle with this and for Both Solomons to now be born at Shirebrook how weird is this, although I am taking place of birth for Solomon Boot from the 1911 Census and not from a birth registration

Am really struggling with my maternal grandfather's side of the family and wonder if anyone can help me shed some light on it.

My Grandfather is Harvey Dye (1905 - 1961 born/died Chesterfield), Derbyshire married twice (1) Harriett Susannah Bonner (1901-1936 born Kettering died Chesterfield) (2) Edith Scott (1904-1980 born Middlesborough, Yorkshire died Staveley, Chesterfield) , between the two women they had 15 children.

Now here is where the fun starts Harvey's Father was (1) Thomas Dye was killed at the age of 29 and his mother Susannah Newton (1877-1940 born Mossborough died Chesterfield), married what appears to be a further twice after Thomas' death (2) Joseph Boot (born 1876 Netherton, Worcestershire) on the 1911 census I had them living at 31 Cross St Whinney Hill Dolton Brook Nr Rotherham.  Taken from the 1911 census Joseph Boot, 35, head, Coal Miner, married 5 years, 5 children (4 alive); Susannah Boot, 34, wife; Solomon Boot, 2, Joseph Dye, 8; Harvey Dye, 6.

Harvey and his brother Joseph had obviously been adopted by Joseph and now had a younger brother Solomon Boot (Born 1908 Yorkshire) although the 1911 census states there are 4 children living I cannot find the 4th child although it is possible it could be Lillian born 1907 a year before Solomon however her suranme is Round as are her two sisters Edith Agnes born 1909 and Sarah born 1911, all three girls were born in Chesterfield.  Their father was Susannah's possible (3) husband Joseph Round (born 1876 Netherton, Worcestershire)

You can see now why I am struggling, are these two Joseph's the same man, or is it just conicidence they were born the same year in the same place.  Is Lillian the missing 4th child or did Susannah marry for a 3rd time and the girls were her adoptive daughters, if so who is the missing child.

I have been struggling with this for the last twelve months so if anyone can shed any light on this I would be most grateful

Hi Jayne

I have recently started researching my husbands history and have also found Jean Coulton's narrative about the tragic murder in West Handley.  Its an excellent piece of work.

Samuel Evans who was on the Inquest Jury appears to be my husbands, on his mother's side, 4th Great Grandfather, Samuel Evans who was married to Jane Evans is his 3rd Great Grandfather and Charles Evans is his 3rd Great Uncle.

It was really good to read the postscript of what happened to the families involved, unfortunately though there were no information of what happened to the Evans, although it doesn't look as though they moved out of the area and certainly haven't moved far from the area even now, as we live in Chesterfield as does my husband's whole family.

If any one has any further information about the Evan's family I would really be appreciative if you'd share it with me.

Regards
Val Riley
