They vary, but mostly around 1800-1880s.  Leah Dent & I share the same ancestors so the info she has provided is probably the same as what I have but I would be delighted to add to it if possible.  cheers, Margaret.

Thanks for the reply.  I have quite a lot of info re my own Mouats which I would be happy to share with you or your family but I do not think there is a direct connection as none of the names match any of mine although the Shetlanders seem to use the same forenames over & over.

I have 2 asylum attendants.  My grandfather was deputy head attendant in the 1901 census & he & his brother both married asylum nurses. :)
Apart from them there is the usual quota of Ag labs, wheelrights, whitesmiths, dressmakers, farmers, publicans, bacon curers etc. ::) ::)

I also have an Ann Hilder b 1755 Mountfield Ssx who was married to my gggg grandfather John Funnell b 1755.
Cheers, Margaret.

Midlothian / Mouat Family

Has anyone any information regarding the MOUAT family
Thomas James, Jessie Bryden (nee Thomson), James, William, John Thomas & Jessie Catherine who lived in Leith after leaving Shetland between 1871 & 1881?
William Mouat(my Grandfather) lived in England & I have found a marriage for John Mowat (Mouat) in Lambert, Stirling.  His occupation is shown as "asylum Attendant".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
