Armed Forces / Re: English nurses sent to the boer war 1899-1902
« on: Sunday 02 September 18 23:12 BST (UK)  »
Hiya,

Constance Harriett Groom did not serve in the Boer War as a nurse. You can see the database here: https://boerwarnurses.com/boer-war-nurses-database/. The nurses working for the military in South Africa were trained nurses. Some were in the military, some were already in South Africa and offered their services, and some travelled to South Africa and then offered their services. The medal rolls for nurses are extensive and well documented.

Hiya,

I do not have Mary Ann Foster on my Boer War nurses database: https://boerwarnurses.com/boer-war-nurses-database/ which includes the Australian nurses, and nurses who traveled to SA and were then employed by the military.

South Africa / Re: Constance Groom dead end
« on: Sunday 02 September 18 22:57 BST (UK)  »
Hiya,

Constance is too young to have been a nurse in the Boer War and I have no record of her on my database: https://boerwarnurses.com/boer-war-nurses-database/. She may have trained as a nurse and then travelled out to South Africa, many nurses did this at the time. In that case she might be in a shipping list.

Hiya,

I can confirm that May West who served in South Africa did go on to serve in WW1. I will write up her service and send you a link. I cannot find Minnie or Mary Jemima.

Thanks Alexander,

I will have a look at the TNA Advice - anything to keep it simple otherwise everything gets too clumsy.

My university doesn't have a history department so in the guidelines for students on how to reference different sources there are many things - but sadly not the census. I need to link references to individuals in my text so I cannot keep using Census for England and Wales or something like that. I have fashioned my own way for now but would like to know if their is a "correct" way of doing this :-)

I have a feeling the answer is that there isn't one :-)

Cheers
