Hi Althea, Thanks for your reply. The childrens names are, in order of age from eldest down; George, Kezia, Ellen Jane, Clifford, Walter, Margaret and William.  All are Whittingtons.  Ellen Jane passed away in 1881.  Thank you for the other places to search.  Ian

New Zealand Completed Requests / Lookup, School Enrollment Lists, WHITTINGTON
« on: Saturday 13 October 12 03:51 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there are records of school enrolments kept from the 1870s. I am specifically seeking any records of children with the surname WHITTINGTON at the West Christchurch School in the late 1870s.  I have found digitised records of newspapers with the occasional reference to presentations made in December 1878 but I was wondering if records existed listing students in classes and any extra information such as parents of students.  Any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ev and andycand.  Thank you for your replies and help.  All very helpful information.  The only thing that still confuses me is, why in the access details for her trial papers her husband David is quoted by Elizabeths maiden name.  Could that just be an entry error?   I have viewed the surgeons report for the"Elizabeth and Henry" (Elizabeths transport to Hobart) and there were 169 convict women and 25 children so I think Elizabeth most likely had her child with her.  Unfortunately I can't find a McBride or Urquhart child in the institutions in Hobart where children of convict women were placed.  Many died at the Female Factory as it was called in Hobart and there are no records of those deaths.  I shall start searching for David McBride.  ev, some years ago I was able to view the book containing the CON records in the State Archives in Hobart that you included a link to.  Very impressive documents.  Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi ev, Thank you for your reply.   The 1841 census has Elizabeth at home in Gairloch with her family so the marriage you noted in 1840 is not that of Elizabeth.  The trial paper you mentioned is possibly Elizabeth.  If these are the trial papers for Elizabeth it would be interesting that David is using her maiden name.  In Tasmania she occasionally used both her married and maiden names for what reason I don't understand.   Am I able to access the trial papers online?  Thanks

I am seeking some additional information about my great, great, grandmother Elizabeth McBride, nee Urquhart.  Elizabeth came from Gairloch and was in the Greenock area where she was four times tried and convicted of theft and on the fifth occasion she was tried on the 28th April 1846 in Glasgow and transported to Tasmania.  Her records state that she was married to David McBride and had one child.  She spent a period of time in Paisley Prison before she shipped out to Hobart.  David was possibly a sailor and was last seen at Port Phillip (Melbourne, Aust).  Could someone point me in the right direction to find a marriage record for Elizabeth and David and a birth record for their child.  Any additional sources that I could try to find out more about David McBride.  Thanks in advance.

Hi and thank you for the replies to my post.  I can see a pattern based on the ages of Daniel and Janes children.  Samuel and Alexander were the first two born, although a death notice I have indicates that there may have been a child before Samuel.  Margaret was born in 1835, Ellen Jane in 1836 and James in 1839.  akanex2, your suggestion that Daniel could have moved around with his work is very likely and the latter three were probably born and baptised elsewhere.  Elwyn, thanks for the link to the Police Museum.  I will order Daniels records and find out where he was and go from there.  Thank you for your reply gaffy. Daniels wife was definitely Jane McGee and Margaret was born in 1835 so that counts that family out.  Thanks for your time.

Hi, I am new to Rootschat and am seeking help to find more information about the Clifford family who migrated to Tasmania in 1853. Daniel, his wife Jane and their children Ellen Jane and James sailed to Hobart on the "Northumberland".  Their two older sons William and Samuel had earlier sailed to Hobart on the "Windemere" in 1848.  William became a sea captain in New Zealand and Samuel a well known photographer in Hobart.  I believe that Daniel and Jane also had a son Alexander and a daughter Margaret who travelled to Port Adelaide on the "Constance" in 1850.  I have found a birth record for a son Alex Clifford to a Daniel Clifford at Kilrea and the age fits.  All of the Cliffords above list their native place as Londonderry.  I am specifically seeking information that confirms Margaret Clifford as the daughter of Daniel and Jane Clifford.  I have exhausted every possible avenue in Australia to confirm this although there is considerable evidence that points to Margaret being their daughter.  I would greatly appreciate any help.  I must add that Margaret was born in 1835.  Daniel Clifford was a member of the Irish Constabulary also.  Thanks

Hi, I have just viewed your post from 2010.  I am a descendant of Elizabeth Butlers brother Thomas. His daughter Mary was my great great grandmother.  I am very interested in expanding the family tree and including the Cottrells to fill in a little more about Mary Butlers arrival in Sydney.  Her shipping record makes note of the fact that she had an Aunt Elizabeth in Sydney.  If you have information back beyond Thomas and Elizabeth Butler I also am very interested in that as well.  Cheers
