Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Will from 1852
« on: Sunday 15 October 23 14:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello! I would be very grateful if anyone is able to help decipher my x5 great-grandfather's will from 1852 - I can read some of it but I seem to be struggling a bit with the handwriting.

Thank you in advance!

World War One / Pension Ledger Abbreviations
« on: Wednesday 08 September 21 13:44 BST (UK)  »
I have come across a pension ledger for my great-grandfather however I am unsure of what the abbreviations in the records relate to.

If anyone is able to shed some light on these it would be much appreciated!

Hi,

They had 10 children and I have listed their baptisms below:

George Jackson was baptised on 21 November 1779 at Manchester Cathedral.

Alice Jackson was baptised on 6 May 1781 at Manchester Cathedral.

John Jackson was baptised on 19 May 1782 at Manchester Cathedral.

Ellen Jackson was baptised on 27 July 1783 at Manchester Cathedral.

Susanna Jackson was baptised on 10 April 1785 at Manchester Cathedral.

George Jackson was baptised on 29 April 1787 at Manchester Cathedral. Buried on 9 February 1791 at Manchester Cathedral.

Henry Jackson was baptised on 4 May 1788 at Manchester Cathedral. Buried on 22 March 1789 at Manchester Cathedral.

Mary Jackson was baptised on 20 June 1790 at Manchester Cathedral. Buried on 20 June 1790 at Manchester Cathedral.

George Jackson was baptised on 10 July 1791 at Manchester Cathedral.

Ann Jackson was baptised on 13 September 1795 at Manchester Cathedral.

I hope this helps! If there is anything else I can help with don't hesitate to ask.

All the best,

Ashlee

I have had a look to try to find the baptism of George and while I cannot find one in Doveridge I have found a few possible baptisms in Staffordshire between 1738 and 1745:

George Cope baptised 3 December 1738 in Alton, parents are William and Mary Cope.

George Cope baptised 4 February 1739 in Abbots Bromley, parents are George and Esther Cope.

George Cope baptised 22 May 1739 in Draycott-in-the-Moors, parents are Obed and Katherine Cope.

George Cope baptised 4 August 1745 in Leigh, parents are George and Ellen Cope.

I think that the first baptism in Alton seems highly likely to be him as he named his first born daughter Mary and first born son William. Also, his son Thomas was living in Alton in 1841 and 1851.

Hi Sarra,

I'm so glad that I've been able to help you!

I can confirm that George Cope and Elizabeth Smith married on 19 February 1765.

Unfortunately I am having to rely on transcriptions from Ancestry, but I am hoping to get to the Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock soon, in which case I will double check everything and post anything else I find.

Hi Deirdre,

I was unable to find a burial for Thomas in Doveridge. I saw that in 1851 he was living in Alton, Staffordshire so I'm guessing his death was registered in Uttoxeter.

Below are some burials I found for George and Elizabeth's other children:

Mary Cope buried on 4 April 1809 in Doveridge.

Anne Cope buried on 13 November 1802 in Doveridge.

Jeremiah Cope buried on 31 March 1801 in Doveridge.

Esther Cope buried on 4 December 1789 in Doveridge.

I couldn't find a burial in Doveridge for George or Elizabeth. Also, I can only find Thomas and Samuel in census returns with Doveridge listed as their place of birth so I wonder if they were all born just over the border in Staffordshire but baptised and some buried in Doveridge?
