Many thanks for your reply I will follow up what you suggest.
The reason I ask is because my grandmother was born in Edinburgh Barracks(1902), this is what she always told us and the 1910 Census appears to confirm this, and that is as far as I can get with that Branch of my family. in the 1910 census my GGM was a widow staying with a family called Pigford who have South African connections, which made me think the Boer war was involved, but only soldiers killed in action are listed, those who died if illness are not, and there were many more of them
Her marriage certificate(1919) shows here father was deceased and had been a serving Soldier.
I have written to the Edinburgh records office, but they could not help, sadly no response from the castle.
There is also a connection with the Windrem family on North East of England where my GM and her Mother lived for a number of years after my GGF's death. The other problem is my GGF's name I think every boy in the family was called the same, Archibald Thomas Patterson Scougall. I can find a number of them, but not sure if they are my GGF, Some have wives with SIMILAR names to my GGM which adds to the confusion.
Sorry for the long winded reply, but cutting it shorter wasn't possible
