Have been asking for the last two weeks to have my original post modified but no joy.

So for the record, the first half of my original post is no longer needed as George THOMAS has been found leaving NZ in 1867.

However the second half of my original post concerning the "Royal Hospital Chelsea: Letter books - Volume 19" is still of interest. It would be great to find an "Army Form No.31 - Ref No.G35649" in an old ledger somewhere.

Hello Lyn...

Welcome to Rootschat :)

I'll assume you're starting from scratch so...

An Elizabeth Ann GEORGE married a Robert JEFFERY in 1879. They had three children that I could find, namely...

Hannah Blight JEFFERY b.1879
Edward Blight JEFFERY b.1880 and
Eliza Blight JEFFERY b.1882

The middle name of the children makes me think this Robert JEFFERY is your Robert but I've no proof of that.

The marriage and births can be found on the BDM NZ website.

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz

I note a Hannah Blight JEFFERY, daughter of Robert Blight JEFFERY, married a Charles YOUNG and is mentioned on the Australian Marriage Index. This index can be found on ancestry.com

An Eliza Blight JEFFERY marrying a Wm SCOTT is also mentioned in the same index. It possibly corresponds to the following record...

Auckland Born NZ'ers who married in Victoria, Australia
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~babznz/straysvic20.html

-----

A Hannah Blight YOUNG d.1955 is mentioned in the Australian Deaths Index, also on ancestry.com

Possibly corresponds to the following record...hope the link works

Adelaide Cemetery Authority

---

LDS has a possible arrival. A Robert JEFFERY from Cornwall arrived in NZ in 1874 aboard the Geraldine Paget". Aged 24 so born c.1850. Accompanied by a Harriet JEFFERY, aged 20.

Hope the link works...

Nope...looks like there is a Robert Percy JEFFERY with a wife Harriet.

Ooops...sorry Minnie just saw your post.

Hilda CLARKE looks a likely candidate for the older sister.

D.o.d 30 July 1980

Just matching ages, burial location and maiden name so no actual proof.

[...] Lilian aged 17

Hello...

There is a Lilian HILTON, ashes burial, at the same cemetery. This may be the younger daughter Lilian. The age fits.

BDM NZ Deaths
1998/2407 - HILTON, Lilian - d.o.b 30 December 1910

BDM NZ search
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

I can't put the details of this Lilian's marriage on the board due to the 80-year marriage privacy rule so I'll send you a PM (private message) with the details....once you make a third post as you can't send or receive PM's until you have made three posts.

There's no proof it's your Lilian but it's a possibility.

-----

There is also a Hilda CLARKE mentioned on the same cemetery website. Doesn't specifically mention Birkenhead/Glenfield but there's a chance this may be your Hilda.

Seems that New Zealand didn't have their own Navy until 1909

Hello...

I don't think we officially had our own Navy until 1941. There were celebrations just a few years ago (2011) for the 70th anniversary.

"From 29 September to 3 October 2011 eleven ships of the RNZN will assemble at Wellington to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of King George VI granting our Naval Forces his royal recognition"

Hello...

A James Cavil RIDLER is listed on the TNA website. That may have more info.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0tx1/

My guess for the cap is Royal Navy Artillery Volunteers. The seamen in the following photo seem to have the same collar and lanyard. Similar attitude towards facial hair too.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0tx2/

Just guessing :)

Hi Tiki...

Sorry. I knew they were all born in India. I should have written something like...

"Although the burial record says she was born in England that's not really proof of anything. So this may still be the right Agnes and is still worth looking into."

Here's the ITM info...

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,494517.msg4544371.html#msg4544371

Here's an example of an ITM thread. It goes slightly astray but, as ever, Spades gets there in the end.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,645491.msg4927814.html#msg4927814

If you do request an ITM just mention the names of the groom and bride. As the wedding is pre-1881 it will be in the ITM card index which will make it easier for the looker-upper.

The ITM might not be of much help but it's still worth checking out.

Beg
