Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: Cumberland House School Grand Drive Raynes Park

Both West Surrey FHS and East Surrey FHS cover Raynes Park but I would contact the Catholic Family History Society. http://catholicfhs.online/

Raynes Park is in the London Borough of Merton.  Its local studies library may be able topoint you in the right direction:

West Norwood cemetery rang a bell (very belatedly I’m afraid). THe council were taken to court 20 odd years ago for vandalising many of  the graves.  It seems that at least part of the cemetery is subject to Faculty jurisdiction ie Church Courts - Southwark anglican diocese in this case.

This gives the background. — just read management summary first paragraph.

See also the Friends of West Norwood cemetery web site

We have just over 500 names in the Surrey MI Index from this cemetery, but not the ones you are after unfortunately.

Sixth Avenue in 1912 was in East Ham Urban District, now London Borough of Newham.

The photographer’s address - commercial road is in Tower Hamlets — Borough of Stepney (I think) when the photo was taken.

I would be inclined to contact. London Borough of Newham Local Studies Library

And Tower Hamlets Local Studies

To see if either can add anything.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: Questions about how UK cemeteries work.

As iluleah said, it really depends on the contract that the executors signed with the cemetery owner, and the owners rules and regulations.

It's not something one usually thinks about when arranging a funeral, I know I didn't read the "small print" when arranging my parents funerals, and my brother's grave was reclaimed after 50 years which was a disappointment when I wanted to find it.

It's worth mentioning that many local family history societies have collected details of stones and other memorials in the area they cover.    My own society has more than 137,000 names recorded, although coverage more recent than say early to mid 20th century tends to be patchy as we don't have the volunteers anymore.

Contact the FHS for the area of interest, see http://www.ffhs.org.uk/members2/contacting.php if you don't know which society to contact

Heather

I had to go to Knaphill this morning so thought I would have a look for no 47 The broadway.

As someone else has said the area has been completely redeveloped since Brookwood Hospital closed in the 1990s   Standing outside no 48 and looking across the road and through the trees is the site of the Vyne Community Centre and a doctors' surgery   I would guess this is roughly the site of no 47.

If you go to Google Maps and search from either Knaphill GU21 2SP or Woking GU21 2SP you should be able to see what the area looks like now.

I did have a quick look at the National Library of Scotland site https://maps.nls.uk to see what they have for the area. It seems to be playing fields on the side of the road where 47 should be but I cant get a decent magnification on my screen.

I notice that you are still awaiting an answer to your question about the Roman Catholic churches.  The nearest RC church is St Hugh of Lincoln,  maybe 15 minutes walk away from The Vyne  see:
http://www.surreychurches.org.uk/woking/knaphillhugh.shtml

There is no graveyard a St Hugh's,  I can't remember when the RC Church lifted its ban on cremation, the nearest cemetery is at Brookwood.  http://www.surreycemeteries.org.uk/woking/brookwoodcem.shtml

I believe the LDS filmed the Brookwood  burial registers some years ago, or some of them are in the Surrey History Centre

There are two RC plots in Brookwood. http://www.brookwoodcemetery.com/plots-and-sections/

Surrey / Re: Hayters of Windlesham

Hi !

The monumental inscriptions for Windlesham were collected by Cliff Webb in 1977 for the West Surrey Family History Society.

If you are new to family history a "monumental inscription" is the inscription on a gravestone or a plaque in a church.  My apologies if you  knew that.

Ther are four mentions of Windlesham Hayters in the Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index plus a scattering around the County.

If you contact me off list: monumental AT wsfhs.org I will send the Windlesham inscriptions to you.

West Surrey FHS also has indexes to burials and baptism in Windlesham.  See our Parish Information page for details
http://www.surreychurches.org.uk/surreyheath/windleshamsjb.shtml

The Churches of Surrey Index is work in progress as we try to identify all the churches, graveyards and cemeteries which have existed in the county since New Year's Day 1688.
