According to the Wantage Parish Register, Charles Heath was baptised in Wantage on 8th August 1823. His parents were James and Hannah. Profession of father: hempdresser and Charles was born on 17th July 1823.  I trust this is of some help.

Berkshire / Re: Fortescue Baulking Grange

Dear John

I have been reading the correspondence on Rootschat regarding the Fortescue family of Berkshire and that of Baulking in particular with interest. I am at the moment helping a friend with her Fortescue family history which may have links with your family.

The Fortescue family I am researching has been traced to Jane Fortescue who was baptised in Wantage on the 2nd February 1787. Her parents were John Fortescue (bapt 14/1/1758 in Faringdon (although from Little Coxwell)) and Sarah Giles (from Letcombe Regis) who married in Wantage on the 3rd July 1780. Jane's grandparents were James Fortescue and Elizabeth Hazel who married (by licence) on 20th  September 1751 in Uffington. James (according to the Licence Bond) was from Great Coxwell  and his wife was from Fernham. Looking at the Great Coxwell  Parish Register there is a James Fortescue baptised on 15th Agust 1736 which maybe this James. His parents are given as another James and Mary.

Any connections with your reseach.? Buckland, Faringdon, the Coxwells and Uffington are all in (a geographical) line to Wantage so there is most probably a link somewhere.

Kind regards

Trevor

There are two documents dealing with the history of this unit at the National Archives Kew.. They are WO95/56 Director Inland Water Transport Sep 1916-Mar 1917. This is a series of letters and reports, and WO158/85 which is entitled History of Inland Water Transport. The latter is approx. 157pages and is the history of the RE IWT in WW1.

Hi Maggie
As a local and family history volunteer in both the Vale and Downland Museum and Wantage Library I maybe able to help. What is the surname of the person with the cleft lip? There are no lists of the workers on the Lockinge Estate but I do know the archivist who may also be able to help but would also need a name.
Kind regards

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Annie PINNELL
« on: Tuesday 29 January 13 17:40 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Atalanta and Kanskar
I read your correspondence regarding Annie van den Driessche (nee' Pinnell) with interest. I am a family and local history volunteer researcher at the Vale and Downland Museum Wantage Oxon and am at the moment interested in researching events in Wantage during the Great War 1914-1918 for an exhibition next year. During WW1 there were approx 50 Belgian Refugees staying in the Wantage Drill Hall in Springfield Road. The managers of the 'refugee centre' were Annie and Ivo.Annie was also the Superintendent of the women munitions workers at Wantage Engineering Ltd where some of the Belgians worked. There is a photo of the munitions workers with I believe possibly Annie in the centre. I have several questions that you maybe able to help with:
There were Pinnells at Charlton near Wantage at Parsonage Farm. Any relations to Annie?
Are there any family stories of Annie and Ivo's time at Wantage?
I am also looking for the names of any of the other Belgians who were in Wantage at the same time. Can you help?
    Thank you
    Trevor
