Midlothian / Grandfather's Birth/Baptism 1912ish - McCabe/Thomson
« on: Wednesday 15 October 14 14:37 BST (UK) »
This is my last ditch attempt for any help anyone may be good enough to offer.
I have searched in vain for years to find my Grandfather's birth record. My father is now very ill and I am desperate to be able to close this mystery.
Grandad, Robert McCabe, joined the Royal Scots Greys in 1928 though said after he had 'fudged his dates' to be able to enlist.
He married in 1938, listing Hugh McCabe as father (Hugh died in 1908) and Mary Thomson as mother. He listed his age as 28.
He passed in 1982, aged 70, with Hugh and Mary as parents.
Everything points to his year of birth as 1910, though if this is true, Hugh could not be his father as he passed in 1908. I have no idea if he knew his 'true' parentage.
He apparently mentioned that he was born in the Fountainbridge area. In 1911, I have his mother and siblings living in The Pleasance (Newington district). His maternal grandparents lived after in Fountainbridge where they died in the 1920s.
I am at a complete loss of where else to go with my search. I have looked at all Robert McCabes and Robert Thomsons (putative mother's maiden name) born between 1910-1914 with no bells being rung.
Please please can anyone help? Is there anywhere I could search? Baptism records anywhere? His birthday was always celebrated on April 28th.
Thank you in advance.
