Argyllshire / Re: Cameron/Fletcher, Morvern, Oban

From what I have from the censuses I have found that seem to match, they had their first child in 1839, so a marriage in 1847 seems to be a little late.

The children are Mary, Peggy, Margaret, John and Samuel.

From the censuses Hugh should have been born around 1805, and Anne around 1813.

This could of course be totally wrong, but just thought I'd add it to the information :)

Thank you for your input so far! I'm Norwegian, so I'm not that competent with the UK genealogy resources :)

I have seen the census, and this could very possibly be them, as the names of the children are names that have been used later in the family. So this supports the fact that the marriage record is the right one, and that his parents actually is Hugh and Ann/Anne, even though I can't seem to find a birth record on him with the right parents.

I have found a birth record of a John Cameron with parents Hugh Cameron and Anne Fletcher, but it's 50 years too early.. Missed a generation? Haha. So I have started questioning if I have done a huge error somewhere early in the research, but the censuses seems to support the research so far.

Hi.

I'm sorry if I have posted about this family on here before, but I couldn't find anything.

I'm hoping someone knows this family and/or can help me.

I have come to a complete standstill at my great-great grandfather John Cameron. According to census records he was born around 1852, Morvern, but I haven't found a record on this with the same parents that was named in the marriage record - Hugh Cameron and Anne Fletcher.

He is also listed as widower at his marriage record to Mary Mac Callum in 1880 in Oban. I haven't found any marriages that could be his from the years before 1880. So if someone should know something, or have some time on their hands, any info would be appreciated!

I have recently also heard rumors that there are some Spanish connections in this line somewhere.

This is what I have on John Cameron:

Born around 1852, Morvern, Oban to parents Hugh Cameron and Anne Fletcher.

He married Mary Mac Callum in 1880, Oban. They had 8 children. Around 1900 they moved to Inveroran Hotel and lived at and ran the hotel until around 1930. John seems to have left the family a little earlier. He died in 1928 in Oban.

So, the later part of his life isn't as much of a mystery as the earlier parts. If anyone knows anything, or can find something that I have overlooked, that would be much appreciated!

I got your reply to my email re Alexander Ross and Janet Gibson. Their son John Ross married a Janet Jack and their daughter Marion Ross was my ancestor (their granddaughter)

Alexander and Janet's daughter Marion Ross did marry a William Adam who is therefore the aunt of my Marion Ross.

I hope you can understand this and I look forward to hearing from you

Aha, then I understand! So it is the same family :) Great! Would be very interested in hearing what you have. You'd be more than welcome to view my tree on Ancestry to see what I have so far.

Hi

Quote
The name we've been given is McKinley Shaw (spelling might be totally different.)

Is this a christian name and surname or a hyphenated surname (ie)  McKinley-Shaw

Have you checked the Scottish 1911 census for them?   www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

John Cameron (b. 1884)

Was John 15yrs older than Margaret or do you mean 1894?   Either way - have you checked the 1911 to see where he was working at that time?

From what I understand it was two last names, but I could be wrong. That was the names my grandmother remembers hearing.

It's correct that John was 15 years older than Margaret. They met while working at the McKinley Shaw residence, and she became pregnant and the Lord made John marry Margaret (at least that's what we've been told.) Kind of a Downton Abbey storyline..

Margaret was 21 when she became pregnant in 1920, so they met around that time.

John worked as a stagecoach driver in 1911. He was living at Inveroran Hotel near Oban at the time. The reason I though this Lord McKinley Shaw lived in Stirlingshire is that Margaret is living in Kilsyth in 1911, and she and John is married in Kilsyth in 1920.

Stirlingshire / Lord McKinley Shaw

I have just recently found out that my great grandparents met while working for a Lord in the early 1920s. The name we've been given is McKinley Shaw (spelling might be totally different.)

Does anyone know of a family with these names in this area in the 1920s? He might have been a lord, but we are not sure. It must have been a big house, as my great grandmother worked in a kitchen, and my great grandfather worked as a chauffeur.

My great grandparents names were John Cameron (b. 1884) and Margaret Leishman Adam (b. 1899.)

Oh wow, I thought it might be one of you guys when I saw your username! I'll PM you :)

Missmagee will need to make one more post before the PM system is made available. If you try sending a PM before that the system will probably return an error message saying mailbox full.

Ah, OK! Didn't know that :) Haven't gotten any error message yet, but we'll see.

Thanks.

John Cameron and his wife were my grandparents, which means that your grandmother, whose name begins with M, is my aunt.  My mother is  your great-aunt, and still lives in Glasgow.  Your mother is one of two sisters who are both my cousins (obviously!!)
I have many fond memories of my grandfather, but my gran died while I was young.  They lived in a tenement building at 838 Argyle Street, which is near Elderslie Street, on the middle floor of three. Your grandmother often looked after me when I was a young child.  Before she married your grandfather she used to lodge in a house in Exeter Drive in Glasgow with a Mrs Johnstone.  I always remember that she  had the tiniest feet, and took a size 3 in uk sizes.  She was very dainty.  Her eldest sister was called  Anna, and lived in the US, another sister Rena and my mum.  Brothers Jim, Ewan and Dougie.  Only my mum and your gran still alive.

Oh wow, I thought it might be one of you guys when I saw your username! I'll PM you :)

Their address was 838 Argyle Street. I have no idea "where" on Argyle Street that is.

Is there a website where one can do a general search of the content in the newspapers, instead of having to read the entire pages of death notices in every newspaper? I don't know what paper that's most likely to have their deaths listed. I'm guessing there was more than one newspaper in Glasgow in the 1950's?

If anyone is more experiences with these searches than me:

Margaret Leishman Adam - died 20 December 1952, Glasgow Western Infirmary.

John Cameron - died 18 December 1960, Glasgow Western Infirmary.

Hmm. What's up? Is my computer is messing with me since I can only see my own post re-quoted as the recent activity? Haha :)
