Isle of Man / Re: Italian POW Camp - Isle of Man
« on: Wednesday 15 May 19 22:32 BST (UK)  »
I know this is an old thread, but my Grandfather was interned on the Isle of Man in WW2. I believe the Hotel Alexandra was part of or next to the Metropole? Anyway, I have photos of my Grandfather in a group, probably with other Italians, in the Alexandra, posing with an IOM TT Trophy. Sadly, I do not know the year. The photo looks a bit too good to be from the war years, but if anyone is interested, let me know and I will post them on here.
P.S Is there a site I can check how long my Grandfather was interned for? Without registering somewhere etc..

Salve,
On Monday 20th August (2018) I am going "home" to Gallicano, which is just a few miles down the mountain from Barga. I go every year to visit my relatives. I (tongue-in-cheek) tell everyone that I am English, only on the outside. Inside, I am Italian. I spoke Italian first as a child and learnt English when I went to school. At home, it was speak Italian if you wanted to eat.
If anyone wants something looking up in that area, let me know. If I can and I have time, I will be happy to help. No guarantees though........ I tried to set something up for Paulo, but Italians don`t seem to be terribly motivated about sharing history. My 94 year old Uncle in Italy only ever researched his Father`s side for example. I have been several times to the local offices to try to access birth records, but they are quite unhelpful. There are also a lot of foreigners trying to find some Italian ancestors to try to get Italian citizenship, which may explain some reluctance on their part.
    tanti saluti

I am still following, although my main objective was my Grandfather Fabbri. I am on the Wirral, where my Grandfather moved to when he left Maryport and area. I have quite a few photos of Italian people, who were presumably in the Cafe/Ice Cream business, although I can not name most of them. I have posted some on here. As you may have noticed, my Grandmother lived at the Pow Street address. Her name was Pieroni. I believe that is her standing in the doorway as seen on two of the photos.
Also in Birkenhead, was a Leo Cecchini, who I met a few times. There are still some members of his family on the Wirral in the Chip shop business, though maybe they have all retired back to Barga.

The back of this photo says "Ice Cream Parlour, 75 King Street". If my Grandfather (Fabbri) had it, it must have something to do with Tognarelli or Rossi. If not, it`s a great picture!

It is a bit of an educated guess, so do not hold me to it, but my Grandfather was listed as living at 70 Crosby Street, in 1920( according to his Alien papers) ( 57 Nelson Street was his address on his wedding day in 1922) all in Maryport up to 1927. I also think it says Maryport on the front of the cart. It took a long time to get that photo as good as it is. The original is very poor.

Hi Fynn. Have you inspected the photos I have posted? As you mentioned Rossi, I have attached a photo of my Grandfather (Fabbri), with the Fabbri & Rossi & Co horse and cart. I have lots of photos of people taken in a Photo Studio at 58, Pow Street, bearing in mind the Tognarellis at 46, Pow Street. Wish I knew who they all were. It bothers me that I may have pictures of people`s relatives that may be precious to them. Either way, the Fabbri, Tognarelli and Rossi families all seem to have a common link. I feel that "Toggie" may hold some answers.

Hi Toggie, I have wondered where you had gone. I am convinced our families are linked in some way, historically. I have posted quite a few photos, including Tognarelli ones and my own Fabbri ones. Would your Grandfather be able to shed any light on the link? William Tognarelli was my Grandfather`s Best Man and I`m pretty sure that is my Nan in the doorway. I also contacted  a family in Keswick who were interested, so I sent photos, but they never replied. Any info you can find out would be great. The photos I have posted are on this thread, further "up".
