The Common Room / Re: Is this marriage legal?
« on: Sunday 27 September 15 19:04 BST (UK)  »
I've checked the registers of St Thomas Church, Heigham and Revd Charles signs differently to how the signature is on the record at Dore. I'm told there was a Marriage Act in 1948 that gave stricter rules than previously about how marriages were to be perfomed but obviously this marriage pre-dates this Act. There is some doubt as to whether the couple and congregation were acting in good faith as it's possible my great-grandfather knew the Claridges with them both being from Norfolk.

How would I go about checking the newspaper records? I think that's a good idea Arthur, as it would be something unusual.

My great-grandfather came from Norfolk so we think he may have had some connection to the Claridge family but don't know how. The marriage took place at Dore Parish Church which was in Derbyshire but is now in Yorkshire (on the outskirts of Sheffield), so not that close to Swadlincote. I have the marriage certificate and someone has checked the original register for me and both say Revd George Claridge, vicar of St Thomas Church, Heigham, Norwich - and this is the only marriage he performed at the church. I've also checked the records of St Thomas, Heigham and the real Revd Claridge (Charles) didn't perform any baptisms or weddings around the time of the wedding so he could have been in Derbyshire at the time of the wedding.

My great-grandparents were married in a church in Derbyshire in 1903. The vicar was Revd George Claridge, vicar of St Thomas Church, Heigham, Norwich. The problem is he was the son of the vicar of St Thomas Church (Revd Charles Claridge) and never was a vicar before or after this time. So were my great-grandparents legally married or not?

Derbyshire / Re: Linneker and Bingham from Norton

Yes that's my Elizabeth. She's not much of a problem, but her sisters Mary and Jane both married people called Bingham as did their aunt and possibly others.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Downham Market Workhouse

I'm hoping so as he is the only one I've found about the right time in Norfolk. The one married to Ada is definitely my great-grandfather. Ada was his first wife, and Mary, his second wife, was my great-grandmother. One problem is that some records say he's from Hull and others Norfolk - more say Norfolk so I'm going with that having exhausted the Hull option. I can't find him anywhere on the 1891 Census which might tie up the 1871 and 1881 Census with later details. His marriage to Mary was conducted by Rev George Claridge of Heigham, Norfolk so another Norfolk connection - and rather a strange one when he got married in Derbyshire.

Thought it might be, but didn't look like "years old" - but would make sense if he was born in 1868 - I've got a birth for then.

Thanks Yokel. I'm not sure what the writing says where some others have the date of birth - 2 1/2 ?? Any ideas? I've now seen the later baptism in 1877 (along with his 3 sisters Rebecca, Mary and Annie) which has Sarah as being a spinster. It would be good to find John on the 1891 Census or to find out what happened to him when he left the workhouse.

On both marriage certificates it says his father is John Thomas Osborne (deceased). On the 1871 Census he is 3 so born about 1868 and on the 1881 Census he is 12 so about 1869. I've found a birth on FreeBMD for John Osborn in Downham, Q1 Vol 4b Page 372 which may be him.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: James Holland 5x Great Grandfather Occupation Cutler

The problem is that the Census records show George as being born about 1820 but the baptism you've got shows him being born in 1828. So something isn't right there. Check these out and you might find a birth and baptism about 1820.
