Hi! Nice to hear from you. We might well be related, and indeed DNA might help. I have had mine tested by myheritage and yes, I have about 4% Viking which I assume comes from the Yorkshire ancestors. I don't know anything about Y-DNA surname project  - can you help me there?

Evanswa: I can't find any record of a son John for "our" William and Fanny Ellis. They had a son reuben who emigrated to Canada and then USA, and a William born about 1856. Is it possible that your great-great-grandfather changed his name from William Ellis to John Ellis? There's also a record on the passenger list of the Cuzco for a William Ellis, butcher, who sailed from London to Brisbane in 1890. I'd be very interested to see the birth certificate you have found.

Hello - that's very interesting and makes us some degree of cousins! William Elllis and Fanny Thack(e)ray were my mother's great-grandparents through their daughter Ann Ellis. I have been unable to trace the family any further back than William and Fanny, because it wasn't clear which of several William Ellis he was. I have his death certificate, will be happy to exchange any information on the family, Can I e-mail you?

1851 census

From 1861-1891 at 42 Walkley St, Nether Hallam, Sheffield.
Familysearch brings nothing up for me re Fanny Thackray, Rotherham. She was a year older than him on all the censuses, so I thought she was born in 1814  - but she may have just knocked a year off!  ::)

Sorry -
I didn't see the second message. Yes, that is correct. She died in November 1892 aged 79.  Does this marriage record also identify William's parents? Thank you ver much.

Yes, I have that record and all censuses from 1841 to1891 plus death certificates, as well as 2 possible christenings for William Ellis, but no birth or baptism for Fanny and the marriage record doesn't seem to mention parents.

I have a marriage for William Ellis of Brightside, Sheffield, and Fanny Thackeray of Rotherham in Rotherham on 1 May 1836, but have been unable to identify their families or origin. They were born about 1815. I have found them in all the censuses from 1841 - 1891. William was a silver plater brazier (1851 and 1861 censuses). Does anyone know where they were christened, and who their parents were?
