Northamptonshire / allen family
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 10:38 BST (UK)  »
I am looking a possible family, surname of Allen who's grandparents were, Mabel and Albert Allen of Wellingborough in Northants.  The closest death in this family I have is of Albert Geofrey Allen who died 7 Oct 1995 who was their son;  I am interested because Mabel is the possible daughter of my great grandfather Alfred Wood who eventually married Mabels mother Emma in 1930;  Alfred was my grandfathers dad who left the family home as his wife, my great grandmother had moved another man into their home while he was away.  Alfred moved to live in Wellingborough and there met Emma who it seems were a couple in 1911 census as i have them, together at Cromwell Place number 25;  I beleive tow of the children in this household were his, mabel who married George V Allen and a son Albert Frederick Robinson b in 1998;  alfred and mable could not marry until my great grandmother passed which was in 1930; Any help appreciated;  I have tried national archives in hope of finding some info on Emma and Alfreds grandson Albert Geofrey Allen son of Mabel to no avail.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Hessle Road in Hull
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,  i havent been on here for sometime due to family commitments, however I am now back and am looking for someone who may have knowledge of Hessle Road from 1911-1950 ;  I live close to Hull but our history  and research centre has been closed until the new history centre is completed. This wont be until this Autumn.  So I am throwing a line out here in case anyone knows anything about an old Sweet Shop that was possibly in the Hessle area of Hull.  It was run by the Nicholson family, Robert and Matilda;  He was an ex Skipper both had been born in Great Yarmouth and moved toHull about 1891 or just after.

Matilda was a lovely lady by all accounts as she used to give sweets to the poorer children when they could not afford to pay.

Hiopefully someone will have an answer but if not I will wait until our new history centre opens and visit it myself for information.

Occupation Interests / Wardrobe seller
« on: Saturday 09 May 09 14:01 BST (UK)  »
I thought I would add this occupation to this page, just in case anyone is interested.  My great aunt Jane was a Wardrobe Seller, such as she is described in the elctoral role of Rushen Northants.  She sold second hand clothes aqnd travelled many miles to top up her wardrobe with the highest quality garments.  Some of the clothes she started with came from their family theatre, dress costumes and the like.  My aunt Jessie who is still with us tells me that there were silks and satins and many fine garments included from their old theatre costumes, some in part which she still has to this day.  The theatre was around from abt 1879-1892.

World War Two / Re: British on Timor - WW2

Hi pete,

I read your link and found it very interesting.  Lt/Col Leggatt was my father-in-laws camp leader the RA were under Australian command it seems.  He is named on the doc where Fred is mentioned.  I managed to find on Cofepow;  Which is another site worth loking at it gets regularly updated as this wasnt there last year.

Sadly Fred never talked about much of his time there only to his brother who himself is only just giving us bits of information now.  I will keep trying to piece my father in laws story together.

Hi,

Yes It is actually Oesapa Besar and i now have a picture of the beach the POWs were allowed to use in the first weeks of their imprisonment. Time there wasnt too bad at first and they were fed and given much freedom on the beach.  i have also just received a reply from CICR the Red Cross in Geneva who are saying they may have some records they can send and as we are family it wont cost us anything.  They have been extremely helpful in everything to do with POW and internees;  The reply can take as long as 6 months or more but they alwasy get back to you,  Thsy also have a site on the net which is excellent to send messages to them.
