Oxfordshire / Christian Rice and William Buckingham
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 18:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
Can anybody solve this mystery? I have in my family tree a Christian Rice married to a William Buckingham. The ONLY couple with this combination of names appear to have been married in tetbury in Gloucestershire in 1767. However, their children seem to have been baptised in st Mary's Witney or in Tetbury, in more or less alternating years. The only marriage for william in Witney is to Catharine smith in 1761. There are no marriages in witney for Christian. william and Christian appear to have had 6 children in Tetbury and 7 in witney. William and catharine appear to have had 2 children in tetbury, even though their marriage took place in witney. catharine was buried in tetbury. Can anyone shed any light on this? Was William married to two people at the same time? Are catharine and Christian one and the same person? Or is there another William Buckingham and Catharine smith married in tetbury? I certainly can't find another marriage for william and Christian except in Tetbury. Can anyone help please?

Yes I am talking about the one baptised on 7/9/1746, I hope. I am definitely talking about the one who married Frances Rogers in 1777 in Finchingfield and was the father of Frances Flower Harrington, whose death was reported in the newspaper at the same time as her father's in 1835. On that occasion he was reported to be 89.

Does anybody know whether Theophilus Harrington (Bap. circa 1746) is connected to the rest of the well researched Harrington line connected indirectly to Camilla, wife of prince Charles?

Thank you. I have been to the records office several times in the past and can verify what you have said so far. I would be so delighted to find her baptism. There were other Arndells and Arundells in the area at the same time as she would have been born eg in Edgworth and in sapperton. I wonder whether she might have been known by some completely different name perhaps Ethel or something.

Can anybody help me? I am trying to trace the birth/baptism/parents of A(r)thalia Arndell, who according to the census after she married george Smart, is down as being born in Upton St Leonards. However, after YEARS of trying, I cannot find a birth/baptism record for her. I have tried Arndell, Arndel. arundell, Arundel, Arnell and I still draw a blank. She married George Smart in November  1817 in Gloucester and appears on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses   as Athalia Smart. I am at my wits end to know what to try or what to look up.

I am also trying to trace the baptism of Thomas Pether and his marriage to Esther/Hester Terry. I think that the death of George Pether in 1845 must be his father, but can find no marriage for him either. Can anyone help?

He is my great-great-great grandfather. I am descended from his daughter, Sarah Bateman, born 1827. He also had John Joseph  1824, George William, 1825, George-Williams 1827, Frederick 1828, Edward 1830 and Edwin 1832. He married Sarah Poulton in St Mary's Church, Witney in 1823 9th Sept). He was the son of John Bateman and Catherine Legg. This latter John was the son of Thomas Bateman and Elizabeth Rolles.

That job description puzzles me too, but so much is right - age, age difference, originating from Burford and Hailey (although she is from hailey and he is from Burford). I really don't know what to think. Is there anything else I can try to ensure I have the right couple?

The 1851 reference is Schedule 34, Piece 1732, Folio 615, Page 9. The transcription says Batemon, but the original image clearly says Bateman. They are visiting someone in Swerford Oxfordshire.
