Wales / Re: Learning Welsh
« on: Friday 03 March 17 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have been struggling to learn Welsh for years, struggling as I am bad at learning other languages, but love doing it.  and still going to classes, and have been lucky enough to have made friends who still come to the same group. There are lots of books designed for learners, story books and I find that they are very good. I can send you some titles if you are interested. Can you not find a class near you . Look under Welsh for Adults. If you cannot manage classes they also run Sadwrn Siarads, a day of Welsh for all levels. They are great fun as you meet lots of people who are learning. These are run about four times a year.
Oh ,I also worry about using correct Welsh, but if you want to use Welsh out in the street , colloquial Welsh is more useful.  Hywl

Agree with you KG, but my family who lived in Chiswick always got sent to Hammersith Hospital, again  not sure there was a hospital in  Brentford, may be it closed by the time I lived in Chiswick.

Think it was Hammersmith Hospital, I cannot recall there being a hospital in Chiswick.

Scotch tape is also used in UK for cello tape, but think it could be a brand name

The Lighter Side / Re: How to react - when finding untruths

Hi Xin, one of my cousins was a regimental sargeant major, and saw action ,his brother was also in the ww2 but contrieved to remain in this country safe...... and many nasty remarks were made. Long time after the war my uncle let his sister, my  mother know the truth, he was not sitting safe back in the uk but was in fact working for SOE in France.  So one does not always know the whole truth.  ::)

Jane you are not the only one who does not fully understand these DNA tests. My OH  and I  we did the Ancestry test and I got a list of 4th. cousins, none who seem to have any link with my family, not one recognisable name, and I have tried to  find links. The same with my OH, as his family stayed in one area we have traced his family back some way but the information we got back seems to contradict this.

The Common Room / Re: who do I think I am :)

Can certainly see that you are related. Many years ago I had my hair done just like my mother had hers, about the same age that I was. I had no idea, my hair dresser just decided that was how he was going to do it.. l found a photo of my mother with the same style, plus wearing identical shoes,as to those I had been wearing.
