Cork / Re: more DONOVANs from Clonakilty
« on: Sunday 11 January 15 13:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Ann -
I have irish relatives in Australia, but thru my O'Sullivan line.  Most of my Irish came to the States and primarily to the Boston area.

Anyways - I have spent some time with these Keohane (and the variable spellings including Cuhane) over the weekend and it appears this Keohane family is from The Island.  Not only did I find some of the younger siblings in the 1901 census, but I found baptismal records on irishgenealogy.com that say "Island".  I am almost certain this is the Keohane family I found in Cambridge MA.

I should note, I am only related to this Keohane family thru marriage.  I will list the family below - but Patrick Keohane married Mary Ellen Hurley from Ballymacshoneen in Cambridge MA - she being a sister to my great grandfather Daniel Hurley.  The reason I was tracing out this family is because when these Hurley's, Keohane's and Donovan's (I will explain) arrived in the US, they all used the same addresses: 13 Fourth St, 20 Bristol St, or 6 Bristol St in Cambridge.  I assumed they were all related, or at the very least knew each other in Cork.

A Timothy Donovan who married a Mary Hurley owned 13 Fourth St.  A Jeremiah Donovan (a brother to Timothy Donovan I believe) who married a Nora Hurley owned 20 Bristol.  A Keohane family also lived at 20 Bristol.  A Keohane family also owned 6 Bristol.

The Keohane family from Island was:

Michael Keohane b. ~1831
Nora Donovan b. 1849

Looks like they married in July 1863

Known/probable children were:
Margaret 1864
John 1867 (migrated to Cambridge)
Nelly b. 1868
Laurence b. 1872 (in Ireland 1901)
Michael b. 1874 (migrated to Cambridge)
Kate b. 1877 (in Ireland 1901)
Patrick b. 1878 (migrated to Cambridge)
James b.1885 (in Ireland 1901, migrated to Cambridge)
Phillip b. 1889 (in Ireland 1901)

These are the children I know of.

These families are all from West Cork.  I am not certain how they are related other than possibly thru the Donovan's - who I know the least about.  The Hurley's are from Ballymacshoneen.  The Keohane's are from The Island.  I have the various Donovan families traced in Boston....but not sure where they came from, other than Cork.

Hi -
I have a Keohane family in Boston that may very well be from this area.  I think I found them in Inchydoney in the 1901 census (Michael Keohane / Nora Donovan).  On the passenger records of one brother and Naturalization records of another, they merely said they were from Island, Clonakilty, Cork.  Does that sound right for this area?

These Keohane's actually ended up in Cambridge MA and their first stop upon arrival was a home owned by Donovan's married to Hurley's.
thx
Kevin

Cork / Butlerstown to Galveston Texas
« on: Friday 01 August 14 13:56 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather's brother (Michael Hurley) and uncles made there way to Galveston TX in the late 1800's to work on the docks loading cotton.  I knew they were there with Whelton cousins.  But, I am now finding all kinds of folks from Butlerstown in Galveston - Regan's, Sullivan's, Kirby's, etc.  I can trace many back to Ballymacshoneen and Shanagh.  I have no idea if they were neighbors or cousins, but they traveled to NYC in groups and made their way to Galveston by train - often boarding at John Hurley's boarding house (2713 Post Office) until they found their own place.  Shortly after the Galveston Hurricane in 1900 (where William Regan's wife and child were lost), Pat Sullivan was made Police Chief.  In the early 1900's, half or more of the Galveston Police Force was from Barryroe...  anyways - curious if anyone else has relatives who made there way from West Cork to Galveston TX.

Wales / Mathew/Patrick Thomas - Galway
« on: Saturday 08 March 14 17:57 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x great grandfather was Mathew (Matt) Thomas.  According to death records of 2 of his sons, Mathew was born in Wales.  But, when the 2 sons, Mathew and Patrick emigrated, possibly with their mother Mary Conway around 1860-1863, they listed their birth as Ireland, specifically Galway.

It appears the Thomas family was in Glann, Oughterard, Galway and that both Mathew and Patrick were born there (not certain - but it appears so).

Question - was it common from Welsh families to relocate to Ireland, specifically Galway?  Might he have been a soldier or a seaman?  Any guesses/help appreciated.

Thx

Yes - you pretty much have it except that the marriage you posted for Patrick is his 2nd marriage.  He married a Mary Kelly in Kilcummin on 21 Sep 1859 I believe.  The mother of Patrick's children in Brookline is listed as Mary Kelly.

My mother has always said that Thomas was a Welsh name.  I think she was surprised when I traced her family to Galway (though John J, her g-grandfather, always said he was born in Ireland - in every record).

I'll look at your link in the morning.  THANKS!!

So - finally sat down and looked at this.  I think you found the birth record for my second great grandfather John Thomas in 1843.  I looked at all of the records for him and he is all over the place with his year of birth - from 1844 to 1851.  Maybe he didn't know as it appears he came to America as a teenager.

John's father was Mathew (or maybe Matt).  I know he was born in Wales - probably around 1795 since that is when his wife Mary Conway was born.

I believe there are two Patrick's or Patt's.  One is Mathew's brother possibly.  The other is definitely John's brother.

My best guess is that Mathew died and Mary took her two sons (or more?) to the US.  According to John's naturalization records, the arrived in Boston in May 1863.  Patrick said he arrived in New York in Aug 1860.  I don't really know if they came together....Since Patrick was married in Ireland - he would likely have traveled with his wife, I suppose.

Thx...Looking at the records, it does look like Matt and Patt were related.  I'll have to look into the John born to Matt/Mary Thomas. Likely a brother to the John and Patrick who went to Massachusetts.

John is my 2x grandfather and the Patrick you found was his brother.  The DOB is his death record is off by 10 years.

Appreciate the help and a second look at what I am finding!

Galway / Thomas - Born in Wales
« on: Wednesday 05 March 14 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x grandfather Mathew (Matt?) Thomas married Mary Conway in Galway (Kilcummin Oughterard) on 14 Mar 1832.  Mathew was born in Wales according to the death certificates of two sons.  Not sure what he was doing in Galway - but he was there until his death in I'd guess 1860 -1863 when the family, Mary, Mathew and Patrick sailed for the States.  I believe Patrick was born in 1843 and Mathew in 1848 (based on US Census records).

Anyone else have any Thomas family members in their tree?
