Thanks to mean_genie and stan for the explanations. Good information to know, though I wish it would have been something more exciting! ;)

Thanks again,

England / Correction to Father's name and surname in 1865 Wales Marriage Certificate
« on: Sunday 27 January 13 20:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I just received a marriage certificate from 1865 in Newport, Wales. The groom's father's name was listed as Thomas Rees Matthews (deceased), but the second 't' in Matthews was crossed out to make Mathews and a '13' was written above it. Then the registrar wrote out the word 'thirteen' in the space to the right of the record and added his initials.

Does anyone have any idea what the 13/thirteen means?  Is it a code for something else?

Thanks,
Melanie Tucker

Thanks very much for checking on plot T558 for me, Vicky.  Too bad there is not a tombstone, but at least I know now!

So true, Pam.  Thanks for reminding me of the obvious.  I've been doing this for too many hours today!  The census still would be helpful though so that I can see birthplaces etc.

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / 1851 census lookup
« on: Friday 04 September 09 22:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm looking for a Samuel Mathews in the 1851 census.  I've got him in the 1841, 1861, & 1871 but can't find him in 1851.  I suspect he is a related to my Mathews family, but I need the 1851 to know for sure.

1841 he is 14 yrs. old, living in Tonypistill, Mynyddislwyn parish in the household of Benj. Mathews (tailor) as a tailor's apprentice.

1861 he's age 33 in the Pontypool in Monmouthshire.  His wife Cecelia (b. in Bedwas age 30) and son William (1 yr. born Machen) are with him.  Still listed as a tailor.

If anyone could help that would be great.  Birthplace might be listed as Mynyddislwyn or Monmouth.  He was married to Cecelia in 1858 so I'm hoping he's still with parents in 1851.  Officially it's mathews with one T but I've seen it with two T's as well. Unfortunately, I don't know his parents' names as that's what I'm trying to discover.

Thanks,
Melanie

Banffshire / Re: Gordon Family - Cabrach

Thank you, Tracey.  I'll keep this in mind.  I'm hoping to not only track backwards (for which you have kindly given me a clue) but also find what happened to Adam Gordon's parents and other siblings.  There is so much guess work!

Thanks again!

Banffshire / Gordon Family - Cabrach
« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 05:06 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor, Adam Gordon (abt. 1759 to 1834), was born in Scotland but died in India.  All we know of his family is that he possibly had a sister named Barbara.

Through process of elimination, I've arrived at the family below as a possibility.  The only trouble is, beyond the marriage of parents and baptism of four children, I cannot  trace this family.  Does anyone have any information on this particular family?

ADAM GORDON m. Jean Marishall (Marshall) 9th September 1755, Cabrach.
Frances bapt. 5 Aug 1756
James bapt 26 Sept 1758
Adam bapt 21 Dec 1760
Barbara bapt 6 Nov 1763

Thanks,
Melanie Tucker
