It always throws me when members of the "Buffaloes" are called Buffs. To me Buffs are members of the East Kent Regiment! So he was a Buff twice over.

:D :D :D It seems so. I have contacted the 'Buffaloes' to see if they have any information on him.

Thank you hanes teulu for those. Very interesting.

As he was mentioned as Bro. E Stroud, and that a Lodge was mentioned, I wonder if he was a member of the Masons?

He was in the Queens Royal West Surrey and the East Kent Regiment.

Edit. He was a member of the 'BUFF's' - The Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes.

Thank you for the information CaroleW.

It is interesting that Minnie was married previously, we didn't know that. We know that 2 boys were adopted during Minnie and Eric's marriage, I am now wondering if it was actually Eric that adopted Minnie's children. I will have to have a look into that.

We know Eric died after an accident. He crashed his meat delivery van while delivering the Christmas meat to customers on Christmas Eve and died from his injuries a couple of days later. I have tried to find any newspaper reports of the accident, but the Kent paper only seems to go up to 1949. Does anyone out there know if there is any reports of the accident in any papers of the time?

Thanks.

Kent / Eric Ernest Arabic Stroud - Band Member?

Hi,

I am looking for more information on my Great, Great Uncle Eric Ernest Arabic Stroud. My Dad told me he could play many instruments, but favoured the accordion.

Dad told me he created a Quartet band and played in the local hotspots around Thanet. He had a special accordion made and was unusual at it had a double keyboard instead of the usual single one. it was inlaid with mother of pearl and was very heavy. It was more or less given away in 1951, when he died, as it was so heavy there was not much interest in the sale of it. We would like to know what happened to that if anyone out there remembers something like that.

We would also like to know how to find out if there is any further information or pictures of the band he created or if anyone out there knows anything about it. I don't know if they advertised in the local papers or if there would be any photos in them?

Eric was born in 1914 and died in 1951. He lived in Thanet, kent all his life.

Thanks all.

Caroline

Hi,

Thank you for those reports. It is indeed a sad story.

The date on the headstone under Ellen's name is 21 March 1923. Though looking at it again, I wonder if it is actually James's date? As this confused me when I started to look into their history, as I had always had 15 Feb as her death date, but when I found a photo of their headstone, it had the March date under her name. I will attached a photo (when I work out how!)

Hi,

I am researching my Great Great Uncle & Aunt, James and Ellen Bates from Hammersmith, London.

I have just discovered that James and his wife both died on the same day (21 March 1923)in Palm Bay Margate. This fact makes me wonder if an accident had happened to the both of them.

James owned a butchers shop in Hammersmith and was very well off (his probate record mentions he left £127,000 which in today's money is over 1 million) I don't know if he owned a property in Palm Bay (I'd love to find out, but don't know how) of if he was just there on a holiday (though I think March is a bit early for a holiday)

I would love to know if there is anyone who could find out if there is any mention of a fatal accident in Palm Bay on 21 March 1923 in any of the newspapers of the time, or any mention of a husband and wife dying at the same time as I'm it would have made a news story as so unsusual.

James would have been about 55 and Ellen about 54

Many thanks.
Caroline
