Hi all I have done my Ancestry now trying to help my husband with his we are trying to find information on his GGrandfather John Barber we were told he was born in Hydra Greece in 1851 although I managed to find a Naturalization in Wellington for 1901 when he was 50 that states he was born in Piraeus Greece, and he had lived in Wellington NZ for 22 years which makes his arriving here in 1879,he married in Wellington in 1884 to an Elizabeth Donnelly her mother was also Elizabeth Donnelly nee Timmony from Ireland I think it was Timmons, we can not find any information as to how he arrived here we know he was a Seaman when he married on Cert also that the surname he was born with was Barberis and that it had been changed, the family folklore is that he arrived here on a Merchant ship and stayed here otherwise known as jumping ship then changed his name I can not find anything on any sites about Births etc in Greece does anyone know if we would have to go to Greece to find the right answers. The other interesting thing about this story is that Johns mothers maiden name was Cotter from Ireland went to Greece to marry Johns father no information anywhere for that either some family members have been trying to work out these mysteries for 18 years or more with no results hoping someone out there can help before I have no hair left.

Hello there I have posted here before but for another surname,i am trying to help my husband find his Greek Ancestry a few of his family have tried over the last 15 years and have given up now I see why here goes, the only things we know is that a Mary Cotter born about 1829 in Ireland we don't know who mother or Father were she went to Greece and married a Peter Barberis who was a Mariner in Greece later changed to Barber we don't know when they married we only know they had a son called John born in 1852 in Greece we know Peter was born in Hydra or Idhra, the story goes that John came to NZ he was a Merchant Seaman and jumped ship and stayed here where he changed his name to Barber he married an Elizabeth Donnelly who we have all the information for i have found a Naturalization for john here in NZ he states he was born in Greece and a marriage certificate that's all I have and even though I am a member of Ancestry etc I cannot access Greek records and just don't know where to go from here I don't want to give up just yet hoping one of you good people can help me out

Hi Rodeo, thanks for that I thought the name was McKeand having their MI and James Death Cert as you probably saw on my postings James was my GGGrandfather, you don't by any chance have any more information on James do you apart from whom he married I have found his father and I am trying to go further back than that I would love to have a copy of any photos etc,i am coming over to Scotland next year and intend to go to Kirkcudbright so I can go to Kelton Grave Yard, I am also going to Kirkpatrick Durham where James father is buried and a few other places.
Thanks Kwicknit
