So were James and Thomas both born before their parents' marriage, or was Alexander married twice?
Before they were married in church. There is no trace of them in Edinburgh, I have looked through the trade Guilds as Alexander was a Cordwainer or Cordiner, but no luck.

If he moved to Newcastle in 1834, where were James b 1830 and Thomas b 1833 born? Where and when did he marry? And what information do you have that points to him being from Forfar/Kirriemuir?
James and Thomas were born in Edinburgh, but Alexander and Mary Ann were married in Newcastle 3 Oct 1834 at all Saints Church, Newcastle. I have not been able to find a baptism for James but Thomas and Charles were baptised 1 July 1836 at All Saints, with the year of birth for Thomas given as 1833.
The census for 1841 & 1851 Alexander gives his birth place as Forfar Scotland as were James and Thomas.

I did wonder if he had been a member of the Forfar Militia which had been based in Newcastle sometime in the 1820s. but a lot of those records have been lost/destroyed.

Is anyone researching Alexander Milne b. Forfar/Kirriemuir  abt 1786 He moved to Newcastle around 1834 where he lived and worked as a Cordwainer till his death in 1860. He married Mary Ann Owen, they had 3 children James 1830, Thomas 1833 and Charles 1836.
Everything I thought I knew about my 3xG-Grandfather`s family in Forfar has been wiped out by DNA evidence.
I do know now that he is NOT the son of Alexander Milne 1761 - 1821 and his wife Isabel Brown. This has been borne out by DNA results from the descendants of those who were thought to be his siblings.
There is an entry in Scotlands People of 3/12/1786 of "Alexr. Milne of Kirriemuir had a son baptised Alexander" but I seem to be hitting a stone wall beyond that.

Hi, I think you may be wrong in discounting John b. 1801. Flixborough is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England

Would anyone like to have a go at giving an approximate year.

The photo is from my family collection but gives no details, only that it is copyright of Newcastle Chronicle.  Getting somewhere close may help me identify the couple,

Hi aghadowey,

I must admit that 90% of my search has relied on transcripts but have spent some time in Edinburgh looking for the father Alexander in taxation and guild records as he was a Cordwainer. It was my hope that this may narrow the search to an area/parish.

Thank you for your helpful reply
