Northumberland / Re: James Spour (Spoors) mrg Jane Wealleans 1805 Alwinton

I was doing a little more digging and found James (69), Jane (71) and their daughter Jane (30) in the 1841 census still living at Hartside. Jane Wealleans age would see to confirm that the below baptism is for her.

1771
24 February Jane Dr of Christr Weleans Sharperton

There are a number of Christopher's baptised in Alwinton Parish and I am not absolutely sure which is her father. It is possible that she is the daughter of George's Christopher baptised in 1722, but it could be one of the later ones.

There is also a memorial inscription at Ingram Church indicating that James died in 1849 and Jane died in 1850.

Hi patrexjax  :)

Below is a link to extracts fro the parish register for Ingram. The page shows a number of the baptisms for James and Jane's children.

No, nothing to do with bay windows or the number of letting rooms.

Normally I'd interpret it as meaning that the building has five sets of windows, but as it originally had only three I am a bit perplexed. Unless the Canmore surveyor counted the extension as two more bays, though that's not how I would have read it.
Hi Forfarian,
Many thanks for the clarification around the description. Like yourself I was somewhat put off by the description of the building and the photo as they didn't appear to match.  :)

Cheers,
Simon

wonder if this is any help looks like the gray/johstones also owned another hotel found this in the scotsman newspaper 7th oct, 1932 reads as follows gray- at redlands glasgow on the 5th oct. 1932 to mr & mrs john gray lochranza hotel arran and of the hotel carstairs junction a daughter, hope this is of help

Hi Harry,

Many thanks for this additional information. Andrew and Mary did have a son John born during 1893 so this might be his daughter. I have searched for a marriage for John, but have not been able to pin one down. John was living in Carstairs Junction in 1940 as he was the informant on his Father's death entry.

Cheers,

Simon

https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5968397 is taken from the opposite direction.

The present building has an extension where the wee annexe building is in the old photo, but the porch looks much the same apart from a change of windows and the addition of some ironmongery around its roof.

Thanks Forfarian  :) That photo you have link too is fabulous. As you mentioned, if it had been taken from the other angle I wonder if the "Hotel" would still be visible above the porch.

I am over the moon, as this suggests the other photos will be of Archibald Gray and his family!

Cheers,

Simon

It also looks very much like the hotel that's still there, across from the station.

Don

Hi Don,

Many thanks for the response and the confirmation.

This looks to be an architectural description of the hotel which may help https://canmore.org.uk/event/850310

Again, not sure if it helps but some postcards for sale on ebay around the Carstairs Junction area such as this one www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254210299610

Monica

Hi Monica,

Many thanks for the link to the description and the old postcards. I had come across the description, but the mention of "five bay hotel" made we wonder if there were meant to be "bay" windows. I am now wondering if that was perhaps the number of rooms that were available?

Cheers,
Simon

We were looking at old family photos and came across this one. I was wondering how I could confirm or deny that this is the Hotel at Carstairs Junction. I suspect this would have been taken about 1890-1900.

The Johnstone and Gray family were associated with the hotel from about 1860 until perhaps 1940.

Simon
