A helpful librarian with the Free Library of Philadelphia conducted a search, but was unable to locate an obit for Hugh Rafferty.  Here is her response:

I spent some time this afternoon looking for the obituary of Hugh Rafferty, d. 4/1/1977. I went through the microfilm of the Philadelphia Enquirer (April 1-15) and the Evening Bulletin (April 1-10). The Daily News, unfortunately, we only carry as far back as 1981, and so I was unable to search that paper.

After a thorough search of the papers on microfilm, and many online resources, I am sorry to tell you that I was unable to find an entry for Mr. Rafferty. Perhaps an obituary was never run in the paper after all?

The most info I found gives only birth/death info and location, which you may already know. Regardless, here is the link: http://www.locateancestors.com/rafferty-born-in-1904/

Hi Peonie,

I've been away, but wanted to thank you for the clarification.  I am beginning to think these photos may not be from my father-in-law's grandfather's family, but rather his grandmother's, as she had a half-sister named Hermine.  My understanding is that the family had lived near Vienna.  I wonder if the reference might be to Berndorf, Austria?  I will have to see if I can piece together anything more.

Again, thank you, Peonie.  Google Translate gives me this:

Comes out), the parts of the incident light (windows left and right for the armchair and fruit plate) too ....? (Can not read the rest). Recorded, 23/08/1908"

Not as clear as the other one, but I can still get the general idea.  Maybe someone will be able to clear up the part about Rome.

Thank you, Peonie!  That's wonderful.  I couldn't make out any of that.  I plugged your transcription into Google Translate, and this is what I got:

"A recording at Pentecost, in May 1929 in the woods near Bernsdorf.
In the middle of Hermione, the left in the picture Hassler's (?), I'm right. The apparatus I had directed, a self timer turned on (?), Then I went right to the group so that the apparatus was nobody. The man behind Hermione with the hat is the brother of her. The others are civil servants. The boy next to his father at the celebration of the silver wedding
a long poem recited."

At least it gives me the gist of it.  I think the man on the far right is my father-in-law's great-grandfather, and presumably the photographer.  Not sure who Hermione or the others are, but at least now I have an idea what it says, and the location where it was taken.

Thanks Liz! I had checked that address for John, but didn't see that one of the witnesses lived there in 1891.  I guess there's a possibility that she was just a friend/neighbor of Mary Ann, but I'll see if I can find a connection to John.  It looks like the Byrne family had a boarder in 1881, so maybe John was just a boarder.  Hoping for a family connection though...
