But in this case it's different. Check out my post on Methven Castle. As well.. The 1881 census shows a complete name change deaths certificates as well as birth certificates thereafter 1881. It was deliberately changed. Imagine, naming half your children Meffen than the other half Methven and then making that change on the 1881 census. It was deliberate. In 1880 John Meffen was born in Kilsyth, than came the 1881 census, than in 1882 James Methven was born. After that every birth and death certificate for the whole family was spelled Methven. But before 1881 every census, birth & death certificate was spelled Meffen and Meffan.

Family History Beginners Board / Methven Castle or Meffen or Meffan castle

Did you know that on the side of one of the turrets of Methven Castle is a coat of arms that is not the arms of Methven but I believe is the arms of Meffen? It shows 2 bushels ofwheat angled away from each other. Not the Methven coat of arms of a heart on top of a black/white chevron with Marte et Clypeo ( by war and the shield) as its motto. I believe before the times of war centuries before it was Meffen Castle. Meffen stems from an earlier word meaning "Agriable land" hence the coat of arms on the side of Methven Castle. Methven and Meffen /Meffan are synonymous with each other. So if you are at a brick wall with our Methven lineage  you may want to try paralleling  families with a Meffen or Meffan spelling.

I have came across a direct parallel with these 3 name spellings and ask wondering if anyone has come across the same situation in which your name had been switched from Meffen or Meffan to Methven? Mine had changed with the 1881 census. Id like to connect the dots with others of this surname change or if you are a Meffen or Meffan.
