Pennie and Alexander, thanks v much, I'll work on your suggestions. Do you have a view on whether Burke's Peerage is likely to be of any help?

Thanks v much, takes things forward a bit for me. The main thing is you haven't spotted any alternatives to the Charles-Margaret I knew about. I'll check your enlist date Q.
Sandy
Thanks also. I was already treating the names Alexander William with a bit of caution.

Hi Claire, really helpful, thanks, does "Anc register image" mean you were able to see an image copy of the parish register entry?

KGarrad, thanks for reply. My drill is to find a baptism/marriage or whatever on eg FamilySearch, go to the County archive, bet out the fiche or microfilm copy of the original register and verify that I've seen the actual entry. About 90% of such checks are positive, but the remaining 10% fail. So no, I'm not looking for more info, only to verify that the actual archive record confirms the computer database entry. Does the transcription you are quoting show a copy of the parish register entry?

Scotland / Alexander William Gow
« on: Wednesday 11 June 14 22:52 BST (UK)  »
Alexander William Gow was baptised in 20.12.1795 at Holy Sepulchre church, Northampton, son of Charles and Margarette. Can't find the marriage of Charles and Margarette in England, Scotland or Ireland (Gows appear to originate from all three). I know only of a marriage in 22.2.1793 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, with children then apparently being born in Angus, not Northampton. Is anyone who knows their way round Scottish records able to point me to any other candidate marriages? By the way, I am pretty sure that Alexander William was the same A W Gow who was a drummer in the 48th Regiment of Foot, but I have no idea whether his father Charles was also a soldier. Thanks v much,
Steve Owen
