New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Couch family help please
« on: Wednesday 29 May 13 23:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello Steve,

I haven't been on here for a long time unfortunately but I am happy to share information if you would like to tell me exactly what you need. Vaux above would seem to actually be a relative of yours if you can get contact with her as her husband must be your uncle?

William Alfred Couch was my great grandfather but he divorced my great grandmother and she returned to Australia where she had been born. They had three girls together. I know that he remarried through my contact with vaux above but I will need to dig out some records to find out who to - I'm assuming your Ella Joy :)
Talk to you soon hopefully to share out stories.
Cheers
Michelle

Dear Ghost Whisperer,

Thank you so much for the pictures and information on Donald Campbell and Ann Macgregor. That was a wonderful find.

Dear AngusM,

I agree with you about the dates of birth - 55 does seem a bit late for Donald's mum to have had him. I will try and look further into it. I will try and find out how to find birth records and death records in Scotland by looking at the beginners section of this site ( and the Scottish records section).

Thank you both for your time - it is ver much appreciated.

Cheers
Michelle

Inverness / Macpherson family
« on: Friday 01 May 09 00:13 BST (UK)  »
Dear Chatters,

I was wondering if any one could help me look up these names and check if I have the correct information and maybe if I could find any information on the parents John Roy and Isabella Mackay. I have never researched in Scotland before and am not sure where to start. This information was kindly provided by another lady who is also researching this name and I would like to offer some kind of help back to her.

Donald MacPherson born 1 June 1811 in Lower Cluny, Laggan, Inverness, Scotland. His parents are Iain Ruadh (John Roy) MacPherson (1756) and Isabella Mackay (1756).

Donald MacPherson married Jane Campbell on 18 June 1826, Kingussie and Insh, Scotland.

Jane Campbell was born 25 April 1815 in Dell of Killhuntly, Kingussie, Scotland. Her parents are Donald Campbell and Ann McGregor.

Donald MacPherson departed from London on 14 August 1836 on the 376 tons vessel “Douglas”, arriving in Port Jackson on 6 December 1836.

Thankyou so much for your help
Cheers

Thanks J,

We have her death certificate but we were interested in finding her headstone if possible to try and get some more info about her. If anyone knows anything about the area in the period 1847 to 1852 we would be very interested to know.

Thanks
Michelle

Australia / Gunning NSW query
« on: Monday 10 November 08 06:50 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Chatters,

Would anyone out there be from around the Gunning, NSW district. We have just found out that one of our rellies died and was buried there in 1851 ( October) and was wondering if anyone has any cemetary records from that area that might help us. Her name was Mary jemott and she came to NSW from Tasmania in 1847 on the Tory. She died at 73 so I am really interested why a 69 year old widow would travel from Tassie to Gunning Nsw on her own. Her previous name was Mack - maybe there were some relatives there that she went to live with? If anyone knows anything about the Gunning area I would love to hear from you.

Thanks so much for any help.
Regards
Michelle

Armed Forces / Re: Boston USA death records for soldiers

Hi Annie,

I took a look at the site - thanks so much for posting it for me. I don't think it is the same Thomas though because it appears to be too early for him. He was born about 1812.

Here are two little hints about him that might help out. I just don't know how to go about it. :-\

Commissary Officers Index

1. Appointed 2nd Class Clerk at Oatlands in 1830. 1st Class 1836? DAC Gen 1847. Stationed Tasman's Peninsula 1847. In Charge there from 2.8.1848 to 1857, Stationed at Hobart Town in 1852. Left colony on---------------(there is an empty space here). Died Boston USA on 15.5.57 Aged 44 years.

Entry in Launceston Examiner on 10 Dec 1857
2. DN (Death Notice). BROWNE, Thomas, Deputy ACG (Assistant Commissary General), formerly of VDL, on 15th May at Boston US after a lingering illness, 44th year.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your response.

I am not sure why he would be over there either which is why I thought I would post on the Armed Forces board so that someone might know better than me. I guess he could have been discharged but I think I was assuming he hadn't as he left his wife and quite a number of kids behind in Tasmania. They moved to Queensland a couple of years after his death. I was kind of hoping that there would be a good reason for a British regiment to be over there at that time. I am not sure how to go about finding info in USA.

He was the deputy commissary officer in Tasmania if that sheds any light. I am really not knowledgable about these things at all.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
Michelle
