Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Church records look-up please
« on: Monday 26 July 10 09:35 BST (UK)  »

Is anyone going to the Borthwick Institute at the University please.

If so, would it be possible to ask for a look-up relating to St Cuthberts church (I think it's Hungate).

The person I am seeking is Henry Freeman who was a scripture reader, but possibly also a church warden.

Any help and information on Henry would be very gratefully received.  Many thanks to all - good luck in searching.

Europe / Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

It was just an "is your ancestor Jewish" icon.  Was quite surprised when his name appeared, but to be honest, I had already thought that it might have ben a possibility.

It just doesn't seem to fit with City missionery and scripture reader. The only reasoning I can find for this would be if he was a political immigrant which caused him to change his name and religion.

Many thanks for your help

Europe / HELP!!!!!!!!!
« on: Tuesday 20 July 10 15:52 BST (UK)  »

As far as the Ancestry site is concerned, my relation is a European Jew.

Can anyone please tell me just how I go about trying to find his birth and possibly marriage etc.

I have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever about him until he appeared in York in 1823 (when he was 32 years old).

Also, does anyone know how reliable the Ancestry records are ..... or am I barking up a very large tree here!

Many thanks

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Look-up Please

If anyone is going to the Birmingham Archives, could I please ask for a parish records look-up.

I would like to find a baptism for Thomas Freeman (born approx 1836), Henry Freeman (born approx 1838).  The father is Henry Freeman - the mother MAY be Mary but not altogether sure.

Also I would like to find a marriage of any Henry Freeman between 1830 and 1936. If it helps, he was born around 1791 and was a Hatter by trade.

Good luck to everyone searching.   ;)

The Common Room / Re: Is Freeman Jewish??
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 17:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Many thanks to you both for that.

He does not appear on any census until the 1851 when he is in York.

I know that before this time he had 3 children in Birmingham but none are registered.  He was born in 1791 and his first apparent child was born in 1836 when he was 45!

I have no knowledge of who his parents are and I have chased records everywhere, but there seems to be nothing at all on him until the 1851.

He had a child in Birmingham around 1841, but doesn't figure on either the Birmingham or York census - the child was christened in York 6 months later.

Still... many thanks again.

The Common Room / Is Freeman Jewish??
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello .... I wonder whether anyone may have some good advice for me to follow??

I have only just found out (after a long time) that my ancestor was European Jewish.  Where do I go from here?

He was apparently born in Crawley - I suppose then the possibility is that his parents were from Europe somewhere ... but where!!!

No birth or marriage exists for him - is this because his records might be held in a synagogue?  I strongly suspect (because of his age) that he had 2 marriages - possibly the first one was to a Jewish lady - the first 3 children are not registered, but the next 4 are registered in York where he appears to be married (possibly to a second wife)!

What a mess .... how do I manage to make any progress from here??

ANY HELP AT ALL WOULD BE INVALUABLE.

Many thanks to all

I have just acquired the York Marriage Index for 1701-1837.

It covers all 23 churches in the City of York.  If anyone would like a look-up, please let me know.

Hi Jim,

Many thanks for the reply.  I do understand what you are saying, but I have absolutely no idea where this took place.  It was just a long shot really that someone might be able to help.

Thanks for the info anyway
