Sussex / Re: Sussex in general / more specifically Brighton and Hastings

The only thing I was able to find, but it's a stretch, is a William Brayham in Hastings in 1851.
He has the right age and is also a carpenter, but there is that one letter and the fact that this one was born in Kent and not Brighton.

For those who might be interested: in the meantime, through DNA, I found out that I'm related to several people who all descend from a certain Bertram George Adams. He was the illegitimate son of Clara Adams.

He was born in 1852, only 3 months after my William Graham left Hastings. His mother Clara lived in the same street as the aforementioned William Brayham...

Chances are that "William Brayham" is indeed one and the same person as my William Graham, making a girl pregnant and leaving her to get married elsewhere.

England / The Adams Family
« on: Saturday 01 August 20 13:25 BST (UK)  »
I have traced my family back to a John Adams, an arts and curiosity dealer who married Jane Bell in St Anne Soho (London) in 1804, and was presumably born around 1780.
His death hasn't been confirmed yet, but the best shot is a burial of a John Adams in 1837 (before the first GRO docs I'm afraid) who is said to have lived in King's Street. All other documents show him at Duke's Court, which is right around the corner.

I have one DNA match that confirms this ancestry.

Now, I have two other matches who both descend from a Bertram George Adams, born in 1852 in Hastings, Sussex, who emigrated to the US in the 1870s. I could find only one Bertram Adams in the 1861 and 1871 census, born around 1852 and living in Hastings with his grandparents. The only birth certificate of a Bertram Adams has no maiden name, and the only baptism says "mother: Clara Adams" and gives no father. So he must have been an illegitimate child.
Clara was born in autumn 1830, her parents being George (born in the 1790s) and Harriett. This fits in with the grandparents' names, though Clara is nowhere to be found after Bertram's birth.

The problem is, that this family lived in Sussex and George was supposedly born in Yalding, Kent. I can't find his baptism anywhere, and I'm wondering how it will fit in with "my" John Adams...
He's 10-15 years older, and was most probably born in Westminster (I have 3 possible candidates).

Is anyone researching Adamses in either London, Sussex or Kent?

Oh, I just noticed... So Ann would be the daughter of a Margaret, and not Catherine? That's surely a different Ann, wouldn't you say?

Good find about Catherine FERGUSON/ADAMS/SMITH  :)  Following you trail I see that in 1871 she has a POB as Ireland, the same as 1841, maybe she was an Army child as wasn't sure where she was born :-\  I think her DOB is 1804 rather than 1824.

Yes, 1824 is her daughter Ann Adams. I think too that Catherine was born around 1804. This means she was very young when she married (only 18), while James was in his 30's.

This looks like Martha's marriage which helps confirm that she is the daughter of James,

John STEVENSON
Bachelor

Yes, I had found this as well.

Witnesses:  George ADAMS, Charle? ROBERTS
So who is George ADAMS? A brother, cousin, or just a coincidence?
You are trying to find out how James ADAMS connects to John ADAMS, is there a George in that family?

Well, that George was one of the reasons I started looking into this Adams family. My John has a son called George, and his son John also has a son called George. No James though...

This link shows (amongst others) some possible children for James ADAMS and Catherine in Ireland,

I'll have a look at these!

James ADAMS, of Royal Artillery, and Catherine O'MEARA married on 23 November 1823 at Carrigrohane.

Hmmm... So it looks like we have two different couples James Adams x Catherine in the same area at the same time. That makes finding his children complicated.

Thanks for the hints!

Regards,
Tom

His wife's surname confirmed by birth of Emily Kate Smith....her mother's maiden name being Ferguson.

:   Mother's Maiden Surname:
SMITH, EMILY  KATE     FERGISON
GRO Reference: 1846  J Quarter in LAMBETH  Volume 04  Page 259

Not helping much with your original query, still can't see a surviving service record. But as I said...service records for this period do not contain family information.

Thanks for all these! I had seen the daughter was born in Ireland but for some reason never went to look into that... Stupid me.
It doesn't tell me much about James, but it still is valuable information!
Thanks again :)

London and Middlesex / Re: Which James Henderson?
« on: Tuesday 06 February 18 21:31 GMT (UK)  »
Also, the Elizabeth Henderson marriage to Charles South in 1854 has the witnesses Thomas and Margaret Henderson.  I think the Thomas Henderson signature was written by the same hand as the Thomas Henderson marrying 1834.

Elizabeth Henderson b.1823 Berwick Street  parents James & Ann - tailor

(Great) Windmill Street and Panton Square were very close to one another, but not the same place.

Elizabeth (who must have died young) daughter of James & Ann, was born 1813 at Great Windmill Street, so very possible that the family were living there two years earlier when James was born.

There’s a lot pointing towards James 1.

Sorry for my late reply, for some reason I didn't get a notification...

The mother of Elizabeth would have been Ann Lidster, born in London, so probably not the one living with her mother in Sunderland. The Durham Ann Henderson was born in 1788, which would have made her barely 18 at the birth of her 1st child, and 11 years younger than her husband.

EDIT: this being said... There seems to be an Ann Lidster who was born in Bishopwearmouth (next to Sunderland) in 1788... The Elizabeth Henderson I found died in November 1823, the one marrying Charles South was born in September 1823 when the other one was still alive, but she only got baptized in 1824. Maybe she was another daughter of my James and Ann, and they named her after her sister who died shortly after her birth?
Stuff to think about...

Ireland / Re: searching in Ireland
« on: Tuesday 06 February 18 21:25 GMT (UK)  »
FamilySearch has a family tree that shows William Henry's parents as George Grayham and Jane Jackson who were married 2 February 1812 in Brighton.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:3Q2T-MG2

I've seen that, but it's most probably not him. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly the baptism says William (not William Henry) and he married someone else in the 1830's.

Hi all,

I've been looking on Ancestry and (as far as accessibility allows) Fold3, but wasn't able to find anything interesting yet...

Through DNA tests, there is a big probability that my ancestor, John Adams °ca. 1783, London area, is related to a James Adams °ca. 1788. I am now looking for information about James, to see how and where he might fit in my tree.

In the 1841 census, he is living with his wife Catherine and 2 daughters, Ann and Martha, in Windsor Castle. He will die there later the same year. I have his will, and an obituary from "Gentleman's Magazine" stating that he was appointed Standard Keeper at the Round Tower in Windsor Castle for his bravery in Copenhagen, Corunna, the West Indies and Havana.

I would like to find out more about his military career, in the hope of finding more children and where/when he was born.

Are there any archives that would be helpful?

Regards,
Tom
