Shropshire / Re: Brown family of Wentnor and Nicholas family of Bishop's Castle

Shared DNA is 34 cMs (longest block) on gedmatch,  and 42 cMs in Familytreedna, both within the range given on DNApainter.  That far back I'm lucky to get any match at all!
There is a Joseph Brown b. 1802 who marries Sarah Jones in Much Wenlock in 1824.  He is the son of Joseph b. 1772 who marries Mary Edgar in 1798.  I suppose he could have remarried as I only have one child of the marriage to Mary Edgar - Joseph 1802 - but I have to admit I haven't gone searching for any others.
I am interested in what happened to Joseph's (1702) brothers - William 1774, Edward 1783 and perhaps the child born 1778.  I suppose that could have been another Joseph if Joseph 1772 had died.  I'm still looking through Ancestry, Familytree DNA, gedmatch and My Heritage for 'Browns' that match me.
Thanks for you interest:)

Thanks Gadget.  I somehow suspect that the eldest son Joseph (1772) might be the father as he stayed in the area but was already married.  Elizabeth Nicholas (mother of John Nicholas Brown) was 36 (bap 16 May 1780) when she gave birth to John - so no teenage fling.   I haven't been able to find the other sons William and Edward (plus possibly another brother) in the area.
Your suggestion about tracking DNA links is a good one.  I have a link from a descendant of Joseph who is my fifth cousin once removed.  Looking for someone who matches me more closely is my next job.  Thanks.

Thanks Rosie 99. Date of the Brown child with no given sex is 10 May 1778 from Bishop's Transcripts of Herefordshire.

Thanks.  I have Mary Ashwood and the daughter Jane.   Susan I still need to find.   There are at least 3 generations of Barnabas Nicholas in this family.

Elizabeth Nicholas born 1780 Much Wenlock - daughter of Barnabas and Mary -  gave birth to John Nicholas Brown in 1816.  No father was named, but due to a DNA link I have with a descendant of the Brown family of Wentnor I kinow that one of the family of Brown brothers was the father.   Does anyone have this Brown family in their tree as I would like to ascertain which of the following brothers was the father of John Nicholas Brown?  The brothers were Joseph 1772, William 1774, a child born 1778 with no sex given so could be male or female, and Edward born 1783 all born to William Brown and Martha Cound.
Thanks for any information.

Hi Vasquez109,
Yes, I did manage to sort out the Stevenson family with help from another descendant.  The marriage of John Stevenson to Mary Culcheth was the correct marriage but John came from South Witham and not Lutterworth.   His parents were John Stevenson and Elizabeth Moysey.
Are you related to this Stevenson family?

Hi daveb,

I had a look at those links, but don't think the Stevensons of Stamford are related to my John Stevenson, Currier, of Lutterworth.   Thanks anyway.

As a matter of interest, my mother was convinced that Frances Elizabeth Stevenson came from a good family, and had been painted.   Seems odd for the daughter of a Currier.   On the other hand, it's quite likely that the daughter of a currier would marry a tanner.

I see you are chasing variations of the Rouse name - do you have any idea as to the origins of the name?

Regards
Linda

......and thanks to Trish for her replies too  :)

Hi daveb - I'm glad you made contact.  I couldn't find the message you refer to - could you give me some more details, please?
I did find a marriage of a John Stevenson from Lutterworth marrying Mary Culcheth in London in 1757, which would tie in nicely with a daughter born in 1758.  This would be Frances Elizabeth, who married Samuel Rouse.   This is no proof, of course.
I have found no more details on Samuel Rouse, so perhaps the family of Rouses you describe is linked to 'my' Samuel.

Linda

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Re: Engraved cufflinks
« on: Thursday 22 October 15 03:08 BST (UK)  »
I'm not able to get a photo of the hallmarks, but got the cufflinks cleaned at a local jeweller.   Now it's easier to see the marks, but still difficult.   From the left it's a crown, followed by the number 18, then an anchor on its side, and then the letter V.

The maker's mark looks like D preceded by another letter.
I've had a look online and this could be Arthur Downing Ltd. of Birmingham (the anchor), and A.D. was their mark for the 1st qtr. 20th C - i.e. 1920 (from the letter V).

So this time would fit with my husband's grandfather, who would have been 45 at the time - perhaps a gift from his wife?  His own father was dead by this time.

Thanks everyone for suggestions and comments.
