How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Re: Tables
« on: Sunday 12 October 14 13:05 BST (UK)  »
To an extent, I agree, Craclyn. However, we must not assume that everyone is unable or unwilling. Using the website above (http://www.teamopolis.com/tools/bbcode-table-generator.aspx) and simply unchecking the "first line is a header" box, gives us a simple neat and quick form to enter details, which is a two-click cut and paste. Easy-peasy! I will look into it further, and see if I can make things prettier, without making it too complicated or tricky to use. Maybe a mod might like to comment? We could perhaps have a table generator on the rootschat forum somewhere?

If then, we take out the
Code: [Select]
[th] tags and just use
Code: [Select]
[td], we get this:

First NameLast NameRelationshipMaritalGenderAgeDOBOccPOB
WilliamParryHeadMM331818Powerloom overlookerPendleton, Lancs
IsabellaParryWifeMF251826-Manchester

Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td]First Name[/td]
[td]Last Name[/td]
[td]Relationship[/td]
[td]Marital[/td]
[td]Gender[/td]
[td]Age[/td]
[td]DOB[/td]
[td]Occ[/td]
[td]POB[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td]William[/td]
[td]Parry[/td]
[td]Head[/td]
[td]M[/td]
[td]M[/td]
[td]33[/td]
[td]1818[/td]
[td]Powerloom overlooker[/td]
[td]Pendleton, Lancs[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td]Isabella[/td]
[td]Parry[/td]

[td]F[/td]
[td]25[/td]
[td]1826[/td]

Hi folks, I see I have had 43 views and no replies! I guess this means that the table function is not widely used. A shame as it would be very handy to quote info from census etc without infringing copyrights by posting an image.

I have started to do some research myself, and forgive me if some of the post that follow are along the 'thinking aloud' line!

Firstly, I have found this site, which does the work for us. Also, we can look at the generated code and use the info to hand-build our own tables:
http://www.teamopolis.com/tools/bbcode-table-generator.aspx
Unfortunately, my first attempt has failed, or rather it has only half-worked, see below:

   [th]First Name[/th]
   [th]Last Name[/th]
   [th]Relationship[/th]
   [th]Marital[/th]
   [th]Gender[/th]
   [th]Age[/th]
   [th]DOB[/th]
   [th]Occ[/th]
   [th]POB[/th]
WilliamParryHeadMM331818Powerloom overlookerPendleton, Lancs
IsabellaParryWifeMF251826-Manchester
The code generated was this:
Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[th]First Name[/th]
[th]Last Name[/th]
[th]Relationship[/th]
[th]Marital[/th]
[th]Gender[/th]
[th]Age[/th]
[th]DOB[/th]
[th]Occ[/th]
[th]POB[/th]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td]William[/td]
[td]Parry[/td]
[td]Head[/td]
[td]M[/td]
[td]M[/td]
[td]33[/td]
[td]1818[/td]
[td]Powerloom overlooker[/td]
[td]Pendleton, Lancs[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td]Isabella[/td]
[td]Parry[/td]
[td]Wife[/td]
[td]M[/td]
[td]F[/td]
[td]25[/td]
[td]1826[/td]
[td]-[/td]
[td]Manchester[/td]
[/tr]
[/table]

It seems that the 'table header' field is not being interpreted correctly.. A cup of tea, then, and some more head-scratching....

England / Uthersall/Huthersall Lancs/Cheshire
« on: Saturday 11 October 14 21:25 BST (UK)  »
I recently came across this gang in the 1851 census, living in Manchester. I have also found the marriage of William and Isabella, in Eccles/Pendleton 1844, where her name is given as Huthersall and her father is an engraver. I can't find any matches in 1841. I am guessing that Robert must be Isabella's brother. Perhaps I am being unusually dim! Can anyone find the (H)uthersalls in 1841?

I notice here is a BB code option to insert a table. Is there any FAQ or info on how to use this?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Sampson family Cheetham

Hi, JustinL, Heywood and heatherjulie, and thanks again for your advice and expertise. I am sure you are correct when you surmise that the marriage records pre-1858 are from the Halliwell St community. What I had not realised was how tiny the jewish community was in Manchester in the early part of the C19th, or indeed that Manchester was itself only a medium-sized provincial town, which was growing at an incredible rate at that time. When looking up the Great Synagogue, I stumbled upon this book, about 2/3 of which is available as a 'preview' on Google books. I will ask my library/records office to get a copy.

I must confess that when you and others suggested possible other members of the family, I was a little sceptical, and asked myself how could I possibly be sure that the people others had found records for were indeed related, especially as the names are relatively common jewish names. Now I know how small the community was, I can be much more confident that for instance Asher and Sampson Sampson that you found, and indeed the Levy family of Shudehill are in fact related. Joseph Levy of Shudehill is mentioned in the book, as is a 'Levy' Sampson, who, I guess, is in fact, my GGGG, usually recorded as Levi Sampson.

Hallo again, and thank you for al this wonderful stuff you are digging up for me! I think I mentioned above that I was not previously aware of having significant jewish background, so a lot of this is new to me. I need to do some reading, 'Judaism for Dummies' might be a start! I need, even, to google up  Azkhenazi and Sephardic, as I don't know the difference!
I have tried (honest) to google The Great Synagogue, Manchester. I find that it was built in 1858. But, we have marriages recorded there before that date.

Where would these marriages have taken place? And are the records available online? I have BMD indexes, but more detail would be nice. Also how would I begin to find a marriage record in the Jewish community in Manchester before 1837, ie that between Levi and Sarah, which was probably around 1820-1823? Would  trip to Manchester, either to the RO or to the Great Synagogue be worth my while?
