Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Lookup for Bramley
« on: Sunday 02 April 17 13:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi sandral,
Can I just confirm that your Priscilla Kind married John Cooper at Leicester in 1858?  I'm about to order the marriage certificate this week and wondered if they are the same people you are looking into.

Thanks so much.  I'll drop them an email and see if they can give me more details.

I'm getting the hang of this research and appreciate your tip to help me with this.

Regards and thanks once again.

I just wondered where I could go with this now. This is my brickwall and I've been trying to find the parents of Edward Coates for about 2 years.   ???

I've looked at all the marriages of Edward Coates to a Mary from 1865 to 1878 to see if she was married previously,  no luck.  I have all the children's birth certificates but no clues.  I've investigated the addresses I have them living at as well.  I'm really at a loss with this one and could really do with guidance or a nudge in the right direction if anyone has any ideas please.

Were they married by 1871?

I apologise, I was wrong.  I was at work and going off my memory which was bad it seems!  I can't find them in the 1871 census either married or separate.

This is the timeline I currently have for Edward and Mary Ann:-

1878 lived at 43 Rider St, Burmantofts (childs birth certificate)
1879 lived at 20 Monkton Rd, Hunslet (childs birth certificate)
They then moved to Lincoln in 1880 and then to Gorton, Manchester by 1889.

I have researched their children and have found nothing that can help me get further back.

Yes.  I also checked Ireland as the 1871 census shows them living in Leeds in a place which was notorious as a Irish settlement.

Thank you so much to all.

Could anyone tell me what my next course of action should be please?  This is currently a brick wall for me and I'm stuck on how to progress.

Hi Gremlee

Welcome to rootschat  :)

Do you have Mary Ann or Edward on census in 1871

Rosie

Hi,

No I don't unfortunately.  The first I have them is in 1878 at 43 Rider Street, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  This is from their eldest son's birth cert.  They had three children in all (John Thomas, Ernest and Jane Ann - still born)  They moved from Leeds to Leicester to Gorton, Manchester.  I can find a lot of info for them in Gorton but next to nothing in Leeds which is my sticking point at the moment.

Many thanks and regards,
Lee

They certainly move around a lot - Lincolnshire in 1881 , Lancashire in 1891!

I can see Edward in censuses pre-marriage - have you found him?

Why have you ruled out the Coates/Jefferson marriage that you have found? Might Edward/Henry be the same person? Of brothers, but when the marriage didn't work out she moved in with brother Edward but they never actually married?

I have found an Edward Coates pre marriage (a groom if I remember rightly) but as I can not prove it is definitely him, it is in my 'possibly box'

I looked at Henry Coates married to Mary Ann Jefferson but they appear together in the 1881 census at a different location so I know it can't be them.

Thanks.

Is there a possibility that Jefferson was her maiden name, but may have married someone before Henry and then was widowed, so married under another name?

I thought that so looked at all the Mary Ann Jefferson's (and all Mary Ann's to Edward Coates) married in Yorkshire and tracked them to see if that was the case.  I didn't find a match unfortunately.  I'm actually beginning to wonder whether they really did get married at all!  I am looking for Edward's parents which is why i'm looking for the marriage cert.

Thanks.
