Afternoon Rosie99 and Osprey,
Yes, that is the family they are in Dowlais on the 1891 census.
Thank you both for the information.  That marriage certainly looks like the one.
Appreciate your help.
Best regards, Loves Labours

Hello everyone, I am looking for a marriage for a James Harris.  Unfortunately not sure of the exact date or brides name but it would be around 1895.  James was born in Dowlais and his father was also called James, his mother was Margaret.  I do know his date of birth was around 1875.  Think the marriage would be in the Dowlais\Merthyr area.  Apologies but this is all the information I have.  I know it is a big ask but if anyone has the time and resource to look at this it would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

Thank you Mazi, appreciate the leads and I will definitely contact the visitor centre.
By 1901 my gfather had moved on to Yorkshire to work on the Derwent Dam (I found him living in the workers village there on the 1901 census).
I am trying to discover his origins, which seems to be Glamorgan, but cannot find any paperwork detailing his parents and hoped that employment records from Elan may include them as his next of kin.
He never married so there is no marriage certificate I can refer to.  Do you know of any other records which may give his parents names?
Thanks again.

Does anyone know if records are in existence giving details of the workers on the Ellan Dam Wales.  I believe there was a workers village and maybe information may have survived on residents.  Trying to trace my grandfather who was a navvy on this site.  Many thanks.

Hello Spidermonkey, there is much speculation within our family as to what happened between 1901 and 1911 to bring about the name change, outlandish theories: he was a bigamist, wanted by the law, in debt.  Probably something much more mundane but, unfortunately, we just do not know.  Cannot find any trace of him before the 1901 census, I am trawling through Glamorgan census records but there are so many James Harris' it is going to be difficult, if not impossible, to find the right one as we have no idea as to his parents names.  Can anyone suggest documents, other than census, where this may have been recorded?
thanks & regards

Morning Mabel & Deirdre,
It looks like a fib was told because whilst saying Annie was his wife on the 1901 census, James and Annie never married so no cert to look at.
On the 1911 census they are in Yorkshire and using their new surname and my 3 uncles are also listed.
I have just downloaded another version of this census and it is a little clearer.  A birth down of Dowlais has been given.
Unfortunately none of the James Harris' I have looked at so far can be him.  One emigrated, the others still in Glamorgan at the time of the 1911 census.
Many thanks

Good evening all,
I do appreciated everyone's thoughts and comments as to my grandfathers place of birth.  The only sure fact I have is that he was born in Wales (he states Glamorgan on documents).  His date of birth changes on some paperwork, the range being 1871 to 1875.  Also, between 1901 and 1911 he decided to change his surname, confusing me even more.  I will follow up on all leads given and thank everyone for their suggestions.
kind regards
