thank you again mable and keyboard. I too have found myself looking in the wrong direction but I do think there are some twists in the Hearse line pre Yorkshire days.

I have a few home addresses for George and Florence, but its a licensed premises I am after. I found the stories about stealing and the attempted murder at the Station Hotel, which was ironically up for sale just last year, and I know a few others such as the Palmerston hotel are demolished, but I will keep searching :)

I really appreciate everyones help and I will see if I can PM the G Hearse who appears to be a distant cousin - hopefully they will reply :) xxx

keyboard, you have managed to find more than I have as I couldn't get much further back with the Hearses, but the spelling change could be the reason so ill check out what you have supplied - I soooo owe you a pint! ;) I originally really wanted to research back because I am trying to find if any of my ancestors were at Waterloo (I worked on the w200 official publication), and was getting frustrated at being a generation short so your help is invaluable.

Middlesbrough, I have a find my past membership so maybe im just looking in the wrong places on the site. The Redcar connection makes sense as that's where my Gt Grandma was born, but I wonder if there is some kind of list of all the licensed premises George owned as I only have a few on my list so far. I didn't know about the theatre so that's super interesting :)

I would love to buy one of his former places to bring it back into the family. I was in Newcastle yesterday doing my course and exam to get my English personal license (My Scottish one isint transferable), and part of me was hoping i would be making him proud. Sad i know lol!

Thank you everyone for your invaluable help...means a lot x

thank you for that info keyboard :) I knew who George jnr and ethel had married, but the other info is priceless to me as I was starting to come up against a few walls....the Station hotel is a new lead for me, and I find it really interesting to see Ethel being at boarding school.

The Smitheyman side of things have been quite easy to trace back, but the Hearses have thrown up a few anomalies which are both a headache and a joy. I would really like to thank you for your kindness and efforts keyboard.

Annette and keyboard, that is fantastic and makes more sense. I was struggling to find any connection and my grandma was wracking her brains to wether these gents were relatives, but the suggestion that these were simply people Florence trusted would fit. I am looking forward to finding out how the estate was split because my Gt Grandma never had much and some of her sisters were in service.

I really appreciate your input. I live 5 mins walk from an amazing local archive treasure trove here in paisley, but its not much use when I am researching ties to Yorkshire :(

The lady in my avatar in blue is Winifred Smitheyman, Florences daughter (the others being my grandma, mum and me). Just thought i would mention it lol!

keyboard, you are quick and correct, thank you for your speedy reply :)

wow thanks for such a quick reply :) I am awaiting copies of a few documents so hopefully the will would shine more light on this. I was wondering if it was possibly nephews, as her oldest son would've been 20 when she died, although there were older daughters.

Every family has little rumours and myths from their past, but my paternal grandfathers tree never threw up as many questions as my maternal side! lol!

Hi everyone, I am new to researching my family tree and even newer to this site, so hiya :)

I have seen on this site a few mentions of Hearse, most notably George Hearse, so I know there are a few distant cousins around who may have some useful info. I am descended from Florence Hearse, one of Georges 6 (?) children so would love to know more about the rest of the family.

Florence married an Albert Hodgson approx. 1888, however he died in 1901 and Florence then went on to marry Richard Smitheyman in 1902. Florence had children with both husbands, my Great Grandma being a Smitheyman.

There is a family rumour that somewhere in the family, somebody was married to the Mayor of Middlesbrough, but I haven't discovered any connection to this yet. Also, when Florence died in 1917, she was buried with her first husband and left a considerable sum to 2 individuals who I cannot find a connection with.....even though she had 10 living children at this point. These 2 mens surnames were Husthwaite and Lee. I don't know if anyone who has perhaps researched a different strand of their tree recognises these names?

I find myself naturally being drawn to George Hearse due to his connection with public houses - I have been a pub landlady for 14yrs so its nice to feel that connection. Anything, beit info, photos, gossip etc would be appreciated.

My Gt Grandma brought her family to Scotland in the 40s, which is where I am now. I am planning to have a research trip soon, however for now I am doing all I can online. My Grandma can only remember vague snippets as my Gt Grandma never really spoke of her past - she only died a few years ago and I cant remember her ever reminiscing.

Im sorry this is a long post, so if you have got this far, thank you for sticking with me! lol!
