Hello Malcolm,
Jack will know me as Jill, Aunty Em and Uncle Ray's daughter, sister to Ian. I can't have been more than 10 when I last saw him.
I'm still in touch with several cousins, though two have died as well as your Uncle Keith. There were 20 of us on your grandmother's side.
I  met your cousin Jane when I was in Australia a few years ago and went to see Gwen briefly. Christine told me that Jack had visited her when he was in England a few years ago.
Regarding asking him anything, just news about his life and family, really. I'm not sure how to send private messages on this site, but it's probably best not to pass on detailed  family information via this forum. Therre must be a secure way to pass on email addresses etc. I'll investigate.

Give your dad my love. Happy Christmas.

Jill

Hi Malcolm,
I'm your grandfather's cousin. I remember him as a young man -very handsome and full of fun with his curly hair- going out courting Barbara on a Sunday afternoon probably in the later 1950's/early '60's. My family often used to visit Thornbury Road then. Jack's mother Clara was my mum's eldest sister.
I called to see Jack's sister Chris last year when I was passing close to where she lives, and only yesterday received a letter in a a Christmas card. I will pass on a print out of these emails.
I can tell you more about Clara's side of the family if you're interested.

Westmorland / Re: Garnett/Myers marriage in Orton
« on: Saturday 31 July 10 19:04 BST (UK)  »
It's some time since my last posts but I've recently been to Kendal Record Office and found no trace of my Rebecca Garnett, though thre are many entries of that surname. I was advised to look in the parish registers of Heversham and Crosscrake, but no joy except...I found  a Betty of the right birth year (1806/7), 'natural daughter of James Garnett, weaver of Heversham and Bella Cleminson d. of the late Matthew Cleminson of Milnthorpe'.
Is it too big a stretch of the imagination  for the vicar to have asked "Name this child," and the parents to have replied "Becky", which was misheard as Betty? The  parent was probably illiterate so wouldn't have been able to correct any spelling mistake.
Another alternative is that she wasn't baptised because the family were quakers or other non-conformists.
Isn't it unusual for a 'natural' child to have both parents named in the register?
Rebecca's marriage entry at Orton describes her as "of this parish".  Anyone got any more ideas of where I should look?

Cheshire / Re: The Lewis Conundrum - update 3, I am now claiming two of them!
« on: Sunday 27 June 10 21:54 BST (UK)  »
I hesitate to re-open this conundrum, but recognised some names and places in your posts which could link with mine.
My Lewises were from the villages round Delamere Forest .
I've only managed to get back as far as Samuel Lewis, born Little Budworth c1830. He went on to live in Norley for most of his life.
There were 2 of that name in Norley, about 2 years apart in age. One married Eliza Humphreys and the other(mine) married Elizabeth Hughes.
According to Sam's marriage certificate (1858), his father Robert was deceased. I have been unable to trace him.
On the 1841 census a Samuel Lewis aged 11 was living in Crowton with Joseph Lewis (agric lab) and wife Sarah. I wonder if he had been orphaned and perhaps Joseph was his uncle.By 1851 I think I've found him working as servant to Elizabeth Lewis, widow,73, farmer of 14 acres in Norley. Was she a great- aunt or grandmother, I wonder?
They were all small-time farmers or farm labourers, though I believe that one Samuel Lewis was the first licensee of the Tiger's Head Inn in Norley. My Sam and Elizabeth went on to have 2 sons, Robert and Henry. Any help locating Robert senior would be welcome.

You have identified the right Samuel. Yes, he did marry Clara Slade - and now I come to think of it, her middle name was Frances.
The date of Samuel's death sounds about right too. I know that Clara died in May 1976.
Thanks again for your very prompt help.

Thanks Kerry. I will pass that information on and see if the Glamorganshire link is recognised. I think my Samuel had a sister Nellie, which could be the Ellen you've found. Very helpful. Than ks again.

Looking for info  on parents and other ancestors of Samuel Edwards, born Pen-y-Banc, Pontrhydygroes, near Aberystwyth,  probably 1900-1905.  Sam married Clara and spent most of his adult life in England, retiring to his old home in the 1970s.
Researching on behalf of a descendant of his.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage Lookup Request - Samuel Lewis
« on: Sunday 06 September 09 20:40 BST (UK)  »
You've spotted the 'deliberate' mistake. Robert was baptised Plemonstall in 1778.

I'm confident that I have Samuel on the censuses from 1851 onwards and probably 1841 as well, but I know there was another of the same name living in Norley where our Sam ended up. Ours was born at Little Budworth.
In 1851 aged 21 he was working on Fingerpost Lane as a servant to Elizabeth Lewis, widow,73, farmer of 14 acres. The family stayed on Fingerpost Lane for many years.
I wonder if there was a family connection between Elizabeth and Sam, or was the surname a coincidence? Eliz was born in Norley. I wonder who her husband was, and where from.
In 1841, however, a  Samuel of the right age(11) was living with Joseph Lewis and wife Sarah at Crowton. If this is the right Sam  perhaps his parents were both dead by this time.

Since my last post a relative abroad has sent me a copy of Samuel's marriage certificate -he married Elizabeth Hughes on what looks like 16th May 1858, at The Independent Chapel,  Castle Street (?), in the District of Northwich.

Samuel's father is named as Robert Lewis(deceased). So far, on FamilySearch Record Search Pilot Site I've found a Robert Lewis born Plemonstall 1718, a marriage there to Mary Pritchard and  burial at Frodsham 26th April 1858, but have no idea whether this is the right Robert.

I'd really like to find out if Samuel had a lot of siblings. According to the censuses there were many Lewis families living in close proximity in the Delamere/ Norley area and I wonder if and how they were related to one another.

I'd be glad of any help you're able to offer. Thanks.
Jil
